Classic Zelda Game Finally Gets A PC Port Thanks To Dedicated Fan

Summary Modder creates Majora's Mask port for PC with upgraded graphics, 60FPS, and controller compatibility.

Ocarina of Time will be the next Legend of Zelda game to get mod treatment, according to modder Mr. Wiseguy.

Nintendo's history of pursuing unauthorized ports raises concerns about the future of these mods.

A special modding tool has made it so that several titles from The Legend of Zelda can be played on PC, and the first game to successfully get this port is Majora’s Mask. Although unofficial and not supported by Nintendo, the new mod enables people to play games they otherwise might not have access to, as well as experience iconic titles on all-new modern hardware.

The revelation of this special mod is thanks to DSOGaming, who reported on the special GitHub project dubbed Zelda64: Recompiled, which is an offshoot of the similarly named N64: Recompiled. Through the special programs, players can take Nintendo 64 titles and turn them into PC ports that people can enjoy without much hassle, including entries from The Legend of Zelda series.

Just as important, with the Majora’s Mask port, it’s not just a straight copying of the game to PC; it has multiple upgrades via the N64 program. One of the perks is having the game receive slightly better graphics and VFX, while another is increasing the framerate of Majora’s Mask to 60FPS.

The creator of the compiler, Mr. Wiseguy, has also promised that the Majora’s Mask port would feature minimal lag and that the game’s visuals will be supported on various PC monitors. Other improvements people can expect include a wide variety of controllers to play the title with, an autosave feature being implemented, and the game can work on the Steam Deck. Another promise Mr. Wiseguy made is that more entries from The Legend of Zelda will come to the Zelda64: Recompiled system, with Ocarina of Time next in the queue.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask are hailed as two of the best entries in the beloved Nintendo franchise. Both were initially released on the Nintendo 64 before being ported to other consoles and handles. The former was the franchise’s first leap into the 3D graphics world and is consistently praised as being one of the best video games ever. Its sequel, Majora's Mask, was revered for being developed in less than two years and yet having a robust story, memorable characters, and unique gameplay mechanics via the mask transformations.

While the Zelda64: Recompiled program and files are available now to download, whether Nintendo allows them to stay that way is unclear. Nintendo has a history of going after emulators that illegally port its games to other systems without permission, and The Legend of Zelda should be no different. One such instance of this happened recently via the emulator Yuzu, which was used to port Switch games to PC. Nintendo went after the emulator, sued them for damages, and then went after any program with the Yuzu code.
