Inside Out 2’s Cut Emotions Detailed In Pixar Concept Art: Jealousy, Awe & More

Summary New Pixar film Inside Out 2 adds Anxiety, Embarrassment, Envy, and Ennui to the original emotions in the sequel.

Director Kelsey Mann and producer Mark Nielsen reveal concept art showcasing cut emotions like Shame and Nostalgia.

Emotions like Guilt and schadenfreude were cut from Inside Out 2 to simplify the overwhelming number of new emotions.

New Pixar art explains Inside Out 2’s cut emotions. A sequel to the beloved 2015 Pixar film Inside Out, the upcoming animated film Inside Out 2 tacks on four new emotions — Anxiety, Embarrassment, Envy, and Ennui — to a group of characters that already includes the original five emotions of Joy, Fear, Sadness, Disgust, and Anger. In a recent interview, director Kelsey Mann and producer Mark Nielsen spoke about the fact that the original drafts of Inside Out 2 had far more emotions than what made it to the final cut.

Inside Out 2 is set for release on June 14.

As per an Inside Out 2 press conference attended by Screen Rant, concept art from Inside Out 2 reveals a look at what the original emotions may have looked like. These emotions included Shame, one of the confirmed cut emotions, who is likely visualized by the dark blue figure in the top right of the second and third images. Other emotions include Jealousy and Awe, which are in the art on the bottom and mid-right, respectively, of the middle two images. The last image shows a glimpse at cut emotion Nostalgia. In addition to the art, Mann also explained why the other emotions were cut:

But my first pass, my first screening that we did, nine emotions. Nine new emotions showed up. I really wanted Joy to feel overwhelmed by all of these new emotions that showed up. And I was like well, let’s have a lot show up. And then you couldn’t keep track. There were so many emotions and they all canceled each other out because you couldn’t keep up with everybody. And my first note from the first screening was simplify.

What Other Emotions Were Cut from Inside Out 2?

In an effort to “simplify” the film, another major emotion cut out was Guilt. This press conference confirmed that Guilt was one of these emotions, with Mann explaining that the team “wanted a giant luggage cart like at a hotel” to symbolize Guilt. Instead of bringing this emotion to the big screen, the Inside Out 2 team decided to saddle this baggage onto the character of Anxiety, voiced by Maya Hawke in the film. As seen in the Inside Out 2 trailer, Anxiety has now been given suitcases to carry to represent this mental load.

In addition to Guilt, Shame, Jealous, Awe, and Nostalgia, there are clearly a number of other characters present in this concept art. The bottom right corner of the middle two images, for example, features a character with yellow skin, spiky hair, and glasses who gives a dubious look. Given the facial expression, this character might have been Suspicion. The figure could have even been something like Stubbornness, a popular teenage state, because the expression on their face could be interpreted as some sort of indignant glance.

Another nixed emotion from Inside Out 2 was schadenfreude. Schadenfreude is a German word that refers to the feeling of joy at someone else’s expense. According to the Inside Out 2 team, this was an idea that Pete Docter originally had for the first Inside Out film, but it ended up cut from both films. Instead, the team opted for more concrete emotions, eventually settling on Anxiety, Envy, Ennui, and Embarrassment. Hopefully, these emotions will have been the right additions for Inside Out 2 as the film hits theaters in June.
