New Valheim Ashlands Weapon Will Let You Fly With The Right Gear
Summary A crafted Battleaxe and Feather Cape combo allows players to "fly" in Valheim's Ashlands update.
The technique requires specific resources and is better used in certain biomes.
While useful, the Battleaxe glide has limitations compared to other transportation options.
One of the new weapons coming to Valheim in the Ashlands update will let players fly with the right gear. Valheim rose to fame in the survival genre and has held pace ever since. Though it may not have as much content as other popular titles, the combination of fun gameplay, immersive building, and systematic changes have propelled it. These changes lessened the tedious grind common for the genre and put a focus on story and combat progression being the real challenge.
The Ashlands update has been described as a massive overhaul to Valheim's combat system. Every new Ashlands enemy will focus on ability use and changing combat pacing. Previously, non-boss combat could feel repetitive with attack spamming and occasional dodges. This update will also add a myriad of new weapons, including a new system that will allow the new highest tier, Flametal, to be upgraded to magic weapons.

Players Can Take Flight With The New Dual Axes
A Glitch Turned Into A Technique
Close
Thanks to Reddit user fayt03, it has been discovered the Battleaxe, which can be dual-wielded, allows players to "fly" under certain circumstances with the Feather Cape. This flying is just an animation glitch accompanied by the Feather Fall buff, which negates all fall damage from the Feather Cape. This was originally done with sprints for shorter bursts but would reduce stamina. This method does not reduce stamina and only requires a flat or upward surface in the targeted direction when the Battleaxe secondary attack is used.
To craft a Battleaxe requires 30 Ancient Bark, 35 Iron, and four Leather Scraps. Higher-tier versions are made with the same numerical recipe but use rarer resources than the base form. The Feather Cape is crafted with ten Feathers, five Scale Hides, and 20 Refined Eitr. However, Refined Eitr can only be found in the Mistlands, so this movement tech can only be used once that biome is reached.
This technique is somewhat location-specific due to its conditions. This movement is useless in heavily wooded areas like the Black Forest or uphill Mountains. However, every other biome in Valheim will make this viable and extremely useful. The fact that these two items are also ones that players will want to have on them, regardless, makes this technique even better. It is worth mentioning that this may be fixed in the future or at least nerfed to reduce stamina, as the sprint variation does.
How Does The Battleaxe Glide Compare To Other Transportation
Traveling Around The Nordic World
Though the Battleaxe glide is a great option for transportation, it falls short of others in some categories/situations. Depending on the level, boats may be a bit slower but come with added storage. The Battleaxe glide will be weighed down by carry weight and severely limit movement. It also can't be used over water, as after the first glide, the player will have no footing to repeat the technique.
Another transportation option, new to the Ashlands update, is the Askvin. Valheim's newest creature is the larger cousin of the Neck and can be tamed and bred. Once tamed, Vikings can craft the Askvin Saddle, which will need the new Flametal ore, and ride it. The Askvin is not as fast as the Battleaxe but is easier to use and works in any land terrain. This method is also subject to the same storage restrictions that the player has.
The last method is the one most Vikings used in the early game: the cart. The cart is subject to the same stamina restrictions as the player, but it has some advantages. It can be used on any land, though heavily wooded areas are tricky to maneuver in and have larger storage capacity. Overall, the cart falls short of every other method once the middle game begins, but it is the starting point for everything past it.
This technique, even if it gets nerfed, is a great new asset for all. If it was a purposeful addition, it was a brilliant one, and if accidental, it turned out for the best. The only major downside to the whole thing is how far one must progress into the game before it becomes usable. Regardless, this new Valheim weapon that allows players to fly should be utilized while exploring the new Ashlands update.
