Steve Carell Reacts To The Upcoming Office Reboot, Reveals If He'll Cameo
Summary Steve Carrell says he won't appear in The Office reboot but supports the casting and premise.
The Peacock reboot contains a connection to the original series, following the same documentary crew.
The story revolves around a legacy newspaper, starring Sabrina Impacciatore & Domhnall Gleeson.
The Office star Steve Carrell addresses whether he'll return for the upcoming reboot. It was reported late last year that a follow-up to The Office was in the works from Greg Daniels, who developed the U.S. version of the comedy. The story is set in the same overall universe as the original, though it follows a new cast of characters. It's since been confirmed that the reboot will be happening at Peacock, with filming set to begin this summer.
At the premiere of his new movie IF, directed by fellow Office alum John Krasinski, Carrell was asked by The Hollywood Reporter whether he'd be reprising the role of Michael Scott.
Carrell says that he will be watching the Office reboot, but clarifies that he won't be making an appearance. In the quote below, Carrell also gives a thumbs up to the casting and the premise:
I will be watching but I will not be showing up. That is off the cards. Yeah, it's just a new thing and there's really no reason for for my character to show up in something like that. But I'm excited about it. It sounds like a great conceit. I love the idea. I guess it's set in a failing newspaper company. And I worked with Domhnall Gleeson, who is one of the leads. I did The Patient with him, and he's an excellent actor, and a super nice guy. So I think it'll be great.

The Office was only recently announced as getting picked up to series. As there is yet to be any footage of the project, and with production set for July, it is too soon to know whether Carrell might end up reprising his role as Michael Scott at some point. However, when considering how the new series is connected to the original, there is a clear path for Carrell and other Office alums to eventually make an appearance.

Given that it is the same mockumentary crew that followed Dunder Mifflin, there is some definite commentary to be made about the dangers of trying to recapture old magic. The crew could be trying to recreate a Jim and Pam dynamic, for instance, only to find that their efforts are not working. Jenna Fischer, who played Pam, has also said that she has not been approached about the project. It might be the case that the goal is to establish the new show before relying on any familiar cameos.

The reboot will have some continuity behind the scenes. The team behind the original U.K. version of The Office, Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant are executive producers alongside Howard Klein, Ben Silverman, and Banijay Americas (formerly Reveille). The project likewise hails from Universal Television, one of the studios behind the American version of The Office. But in terms on on-screen cameos, nothing seems to be in the works just yet.
The Office is available to stream on Peacock.
