Cyberpunk 2077 Discovers An Gruesome Phantom Liberty Detail On Their Fourth Playthrough

Summary V's old face is preserved in a vat of liquid after a face implant in Cyberpunk 2077, a detail often missed by players.

The face implant in the game involves completely removing the original face, serving as a common feature in Night City cyberware.

Despite the impressive Phantom Liberty DLC, Cyberpunk 2077 developers have no plans for further expansion as they focus on a sequel.

Cyberpunk 2077 is already loaded with morbid details pertaining to the dystopian future of Night City but one fan has discovered one of the most brutal, and it only took them four playthroughs to see it. During the acclaimed Phantom Liberty expansion, V is tasked with going undercover during their investigation of Songbird and her allegedly traitorous crimes. In order to do so, the protagonist needs to adopt a new face and given the technological advancements of Cyberpunk 2077, it stands to reason that a simple mask won't be enough to complete the job.

Posted to Reddit by user Man_Of_The_Banished, the player discovered that during the Birds With Broken Wings quests, just after V receives their face implant that allows them to give up their previous identity, users can walk around the Ripperdoc's office and find their old face.

While many may assume the face implant is simply a plate that sits underneath one's chin or even below the skin of the face, it requires the patient to have their face removed completely. The original face is then preserved in what appears to be a vat of liquid should it ever be needed.

The discovery of V's old face being preserved is a detail that many players will likely miss given how easy it is to overlook. Those who want to see it will need to immediately scope out Farida's office before leaving to continue the game; the face can be seen on the right of the left of the lab just before players exit back out onto the streets of Night City. Other users noted that, if looked at from the correct angle, players can actually see that it's not just the face that's in the tube as V's entire body can be seen lying parallel to the ground in what must be an eerie bug to witness firsthand.

It's worth noting that the face implant, which has likely been covered by RealSkinn to make it look more authentic, is actually a fairly common implant that can be found all around Night City. It serves as an in-canon explanation as to how players are able to remodel their character while playing the game given that Ripperdocs can just remove an old face and replace it with a new one. Phantom Liberty is simply the first time it's used to justify some kind of undercover assignment.

Cyberpunk 2077 earned plenty of praise for its Phantom Liberty DLC which continues to impress the community with its writing, performances, and excellent quest design. Serving as the last major piece of content, developer CD Projekt Red has stated that it has no plans to further expand upon its RPG as it turns its attention toward a sequel. Regardless, there's already so much content for players to experience that adding even more into the mix might have been a little too much.
