A new poster of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power shows Sauron's disguise in season 2, revealing how he's going to trick the Elves into making more Rings. The Rings of Power season 2 will feature a continued evolution of the Dark Lord's rise to power within the Second Age, including how he tricked the Elves into forging the titular Rings. His goal is to use them to rule over Middle-earth, controlling the wearers using the One Ring - also yet to be made.

Now, Prime Video has released a new poster of Sauron in The Rings of Power season 2, offering a closer look at his new disguise.

His new look is part of his ploy to trick the Elves into making even more Rings, doing so under a different name than Halbrand. Despite the change in appearance, though, he is still being played by Charlie Vickers, making it unclear for now how much his disguise will succeed with everyone. Why Sauron Looks Different In The Rings Of Power Season 2

The Rings of Power season 1 ended with Galardriel figuring out Halbrand's true identity as the Dark Lord, the latter fleeing to the newly-created Mordor after being discovered. In J.R.R. Tolkien's writings about Middle-earth, Sauron disguised himself as an Elf named Annatar to help facilitate the creation of the Rings. Described as a long-haired, fair-looking figure in the writer's work, it appears this new version of the show's antagonist is this false, Elven disguise.

It's likely that, following the events of season 1, Galadriel will inform Elrond and Celebrimbor of Halbrand's true identity, trying to dissuade them from creating any more Rings. However, since the Rings are destined to be forged, Sauron will still find a way to convince them they're required, even if they pose a key threat to Middle-earth. It's unclear how this will come about, but will likely involve the Elves' need for mithril, being convinced of its importance enough to craft 17 more Rings.

With The Rings of Power cast expanding in season 2, more faces across Middle-earth will offer a wider scope surrounding Sauron's activities and what he winds up doing now that Mordor has been created. This may even include the distribution of more Rings across the world, setting the stage for his eventual conquest of Middle-earth thanks to his new powers. By operating as Annatar, he can better convince the world of his benevolence, everyone unaware they're being tricked until it's too late to stop him.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 2 begins August 29, 2024 on Prime Video.
