Thor 5 Has The Perfect Director & Story To Turn Around Marvel's $2.7b Franchise

Summary Thor 5 could improve the franchise after Love and Thunder, and Hemsworth holds a record for starring in four solo MCU films.

Director George Miller is open to directing Thor 5, offering the potential for a fresh start and an exciting Marvel Comics storyline.

"War of the Realms" could provide a fitting ending for Hemsworth's Thor in the MCU, potentially making up for two previous disappointments.

Thor 5 can turn the franchise around after Thor: Love and Thunder proved itself disappointing, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe could use a famous director and an exciting Marvel Comics story to make Thor's next solo film the best he has had so far. Chris Hemsworth's Thor is one of the few members of the original Avengers to remain active in the MCU. Currently, Hemsworth's Thor movies hold a major record for the franchise, as the hero is the only character to star in four solo films, though Tom Holland's Spider-Man will tie him with Spider-Man 4.

While Hemsworth is the only MCU star with four solo films, the actor's latest Thor movie was not the success Marvel expected. Despite its box office success, Thor: Love and Thunder became one of the MCU's most criticized movies. The film had a clear clash of tones, with director Taika Waititi's love for humor and improv actively hurting the film instead of making it better, as was the case for the beloved Thor: Ragnarok, which is one of the MCU's best movies. Hemsworth's Thor 5 needs to turn the franchise around, and Marvel has the perfect means to do so.

George Miller is one of the most famous directors alive. He is responsible for bringing the acclaimed Mad Max franchise to the big screen. After 2015's Mad Max: Fury Road, Miller returns this year with a new movie in the franchise, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. The villain of the movie is played by none other than MCU Thor actor Chris Hemsworth. Following the duo's work together in Furiosa, Miller has recently shared a hopeful tease for fans who would like to see what the director's vision for a Marvel film would be like.

Speaking to Comicbook.com, Miller revealed that he would be open to directing Hemsworth's Thor 5. When asked about working on another film with the actor, Miller said, "I would work with Chris on anything. I really would. He's a wonderful actor. He's got the full range of all the skills." Miller's comments make it possible for him to take over the franchise from Waititi and chart a new direction with Thor 5. His MCU chances are made better by Miller's comic book movie past, as the director once almost directed a DC film, Justice League: Mortal, before it was canceled.

Thor 5 Using War Of The Realms Would Give Chris Hemsworth A Fitting MCU Ending

Thor Deserves A Major MCU Event

Miller is the perfect director to help Thor 5 make up for Thor: Love and Thunder, and the "War of the Realms" event from Marvel Comics would be the ideal story for the director to adapt as Hemsworth's next, and possibly last, Thor movie. "War of the Realms" was a Thor-centric event in Marvel Comics that utilized several other popular characters and hinged on the return of a character that could help Thor 5 not only make up for the latest Thor film, but also the hero's worst entry, 2013's Thor: The Dark World.

The main villain of "War of the Realms" is none other than Malekith, who last appeared in Thor: The Dark World. The MCU did the character poorly, and with a talented actor such as Christopher Eccleston behind the character, Malekith could genuinely become one of the MCU's best villains if Marvel chose to adapt "War of the Realms." With his action-packed and kinetic Mad Max films, Miller would fit in seamlessly with the Realm-trotting tale in Thor 5. Besides, Hemsworth's time in the MCU could end with Thor 5, and a major franchise event around him would be fitting.

What Chris Hemsworth Has Said About Thor’s MCU Journey & Future

Thor 5 Is Looking Likely

While Marvel has yet to officially announce that Thor 5 is in the works, the movie seems all but certain at this point. Recently, Hemsworth opened up about his Thor: Love and Thunder regrets. According to the actor, he thinks he overdid it on the humor, which was the main criticism of the film, saying, "I got caught up in the improv and the wackiness, and I became a parody of myself. I didn’t stick the landing."

In the same interview, Vanity Fair revealed that Hemsworth thinks he owns the audience another Thor movie after what happened with Thor: Love and Thunder. With the MCU recently shifting its focus to major franchises and sequels, it would only make sense that Hemsworth gets his wish to return for Thor 5 and possibly one or both of the next Avengers movies. With George Miller open to working with Hemsworth on any project and the star wanting to return, Thor 5 could become a major MCU event if it all works out.
