Finally, The Rings Of Power Season 2 Looks Like A Lord Of The Rings Show
Summary The Rings of Power season 2 brings a more Lord of the Rings feel, with Sauron's looming presence adding to the tension.
Combat scenes in season 2 will increase, bringing the epic battles that Tolkien fans expect and love from Middle-earth.
The challenge for The Rings of Power is to balance being more like Lord of the Rings while still establishing its own unique identity.
The Rings of Power season 2 feels a lot more like a Lord of the Rings adaptation, and though this is a good thing overall, it could serve as a double-edged sword. The first installment of the Prime Video series was set during a unique time of quiet for Middle-earth, and the new characters and plotlines being set up took some time to get used to. However, the ball is rolling going into The Rings of Power season 2, and a specific feature of the upcoming installment makes it feel like an organic extension of this fictional universe.
The trailer for The Rings of Power season 2 dropped in May 2024, giving audiences their first look at a world that has changed significantly since season 1. The Prime Video series picked up during the quiet period between Morgoth's downfall and Sauron's return when many kingdoms and towns of Middle-earth were in relative peace. This version of Tolkien's worl was undoubtedly beautiful, but with a lot of talk and a little less action, it simply wasn't what audiences were used to in Lord of the Rings. Thankfully, that's all about to change.
Sauron's Return Makes The Rings Of Power Season 2 Feel More Like Lord Of The Rings
The Lord Of The Rings Needs That Looming Sense Of Evil
Now that Galadriel and the audience know who Sauron is, the fun can begin. The world within the Rings of Power trailer is just as beautiful as ever, but with that note of darkness that is so engrained within any Middle-earth tale. Scene after scene in the season 2 trailer shows Sauron's looming and somewhat mischievous presence, and the growing tension is felt in each of The Rings of Power's characters, too. It's deeply reminiscent of the ever-darkening world in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings movies, precisely what the doctor ordered.
The Rings Of Power Season 2's Trailer Teases Way More Combat Scenes
More Tolkien Battles In Rings Of Power Will Make It Feel More Familiar
Close
The Lord of the Rings feel that is so evident in the Rings of Power season 2 trailer comes down mainly to Sauron's dark presence and the fight that this inspires in the people of Middle-earth. War and combat are central themes of The Lord of the Rings, and Tolkien is known for his epic battle scenes, which Jackson pulled off spectacularly in his movies. Though there was some combat in the Rings of Power season 1, the stakes never seemed as high, so they couldn't come close to battle scenes like the Battle of Helm's Deep or the Battle at Pelennor Fields.
The Rings of Power season 2 will begin streaming on August 29, 2024.
However, Sauron being a more significant threat in The Rings of Power season 2 will change this. Several engaging clips in the trailer hinted at some high-tension combat scenes. One moment saw Galadriel, Elrond, and other unknown Elves in a circle, terrified but prepared to fight. In another scene, Adar and an army of Orcs march on an Elvish city, most like Eregion, in what is sure to be a high-impact battle in Rings of Power. Finally, the end of the season 2 trailer shows Sauron single-handedly taking on some Elvish guards with devastating power. It's the kind of combat we expect from Lord of the Rings.

The Rings Of Power Being More Like Lord Of The Rings Makes It Less Unique
As great as it is to see that The Rings of Power is finally starting to look more like The Lord of the Rings, there could be some problems involved with this, too. The Warner Bros movies by Peter Jackson are cult classics and won't be easy to live up to. If Rings of Power had continued along its own path, establishing its own aesthetic and themes, it might have avoided criticism resulting from unfair comparisons. The Prime Video series would have instead stood on its own, unique, and therefore able to build its own legacy. Going into season 2, this will be difficult.
To make The Rings of Power's job even harder, Warner Bros is in the process of releasing several Lord of the Rings movies.
To make The Rings of Power's job even harder, Warner Bros is in the process of releasing several Lord of the Rings movies. The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim will be released in 2024, and Hunt for Gollum is expected sometime in 2026. Both these films are being made by some of the creative minds behind the original beloved movie trilogy and are expected to have overlaps in casting as well. They will easily mesh with the aesthetic and mood of the Lord of the Rings films, which means The Rings of Power season 2 could face quite a challenge trying to stand out.
