Spider-Man Officially Reclaims the Venom Symbiote for VENOM WAR

Summary Peter Parker's black Venom symbiote suit returns in Venom War: Spider-Man #1, making him a contender to win the Venom mantle.

The cover for the inaugural issue of this four-part series notably depicts Peter Parker slinging chains rather than webs.

Spider-Man's involvement raises questions about his future as he enters the battle of the symbiotes in this high-stakes war.

Marvel’s Venom War just got a whole lot more thrilling and complicated with the return of Spider-Man’s iconic black Venom symbiote suit. This costume comeback is far from just a fashion statement, though, as it officially puts Peter Parker in the running to come out on top as the winner in this battle of the symbiotes.

With the 40th anniversary of this symbiote Spider-Man costume approaching, it is only fitting that the suit makes its return to comic continuity.

Writers Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing and artist Greg Land's Venom War: Spider-Man #1 will be available on August 14, 2024. This inaugural issue kicks off the four-issue series, which ties into Marvel’s larger Venom War event to determine the true wearer of the symbiote.

VENOM WAR: SPIDER-MAN #1 (2024) Release Date: August 14, 2024 Writers: COLLIN KELLY AND JACKSON LANZING Artists: GREG LAND Cover Artist: GREG LAND Variant Covers: TBA Eddie Brock wants the symbiote, Dylan Brock wants the symbiote…but they’re forgetting about the first host to ever wear the black…PETER PARKER! That’s right – Spider-Man is back in black again, and this time, he’s liking how it fits him! Maybe the winner of the Venom War could be the OG!

Initially, the event focused on Eddie Brock battling his son Dylan for the Venom mantle and suit, due to their conflicting visions for Venom's future. However, with Greg Land’s cover for Venom War: Spider-Man #1 showing Peter Parker once again donning the Venom symbiote suit, it’s clear there’s another contender who could emerge victorious in this war.

“Spider-Man is back in black! It’s an honor and a privilege for the Hivemind to join the masterful Greg Land for this tale of brotherhood in the face of epic, devastating villainy,” Lanzing & Kelly said. They added, “This is the Last Temptation of Black Suit Spider-Man – complete with glimpses into his glorious past, his complicated present, and his dark potential future – and we’re thrilled for fans to finally see what we’ve been cooking up.”

In Greg Land’s cover for the issue, Peter Parker is depicted web-slinging across New York City in his black symbiote costume, which first debuted in 1984 during the original Secret Wars event. This suit quickly became one of Spider-Man’s most iconic looks and has left a lasting impact on the Spider-Man mythos, as it marks one of the most significant superhero costume changes in comic history. With the 40th anniversary of this Spider-Man costume approaching, it is fitting that the suit makes its return to comic continuity as the Venom War kicks off across the streets of New York.

What is particularly exciting about this cover is that it confirms the suit isn’t just a black costume but the symbiote itself, as Land depicts the suit peeling away from Parker’s face in a very Venom-esque manner. Particularly notable is that instead of webs, Spider-Man is swinging on chains. This raises the question of whether this is a new development for Parker or merely an artistic choice by Land for the cover. Regardless of whether the chains make an appearance, fans will likely be more intrigued by the implications of Spider-Man once again being Venom’s host.

Sorry, Eddie and Dylan Brock! But Marvel Is Gearing Up to Make Peter Parker the Winner of Venom War!

Excitement is high at the possibility that the Venom symbiote’s first host, Peter Parker, is actually in the running to win the Venom mantle. If both Eddie and Dylan lose the symbiote to Peter, it will be interesting to see where this development leaves them without their symbiote powers. Even more intriguing are the implications for Spider-Man, as it is teased that there is a dark potential future in store for him. If Spider-Man manages to claim the symbiote as his own in Venom War, it will be fascinating to see if he fully adopts the Venom mantle, maintains the codename Spider-Man, or combines elements of both.
