Why The Golden Bachelorette Cast Joan Vassos Over Leslie Fhima

Summary Joan Vassos was chosen over Leslie Fhima as The Golden Bachelorette due to her interesting backstory.

Joan's early exit from The Golden Bachelor added mystery to her character, reflecting positively on her.

The production team favored Joan's outgoing personality and widow status over Leslie's anger towards Gerry.

Joan Vassos was cast as The Golden Bachelorette lead over fan-favorite Leslie Fhima, and there are multiple possible reasons why. Both women appeared as contestants in the inaugural season of The Golden Bachelor. The show was a huge surprise hit for ABC. Audiences fell in love with 72-year-old retiree Gerry Turner. After falling for multiple women, Gerry gave his final rose to 69-year-old Theresa Nist. The two were married in a televised wedding in January 2024. Sadly, Gerry and Theresa announced their divorce just a few short months after getting married.

Despite the failed marriage, the show was so beloved that a female-led version of the show would surely happen. There were many opinions about who should be cast as the romantic lead. Several former contestants were favored to lead the unscripted dating show, like Faith Martin, Susan Noles, and Kathy Swarts. However, since Leslie was the clear favorite, there was a great deal of surprise when Joan was announced as The Golden Bachelorette.

According to John's obituary, he was born on November 27, 1961, in Washington, DC, and he passed away on January 18, 2021, “after a hard-fought two-year battle with pancreatic cancer.”

In a recent Instagram post, Joan shared a family photo of her, John, and their adult children. It is clear from the post that Joan loved her late husband very much and was devoted to him. Finding someone to fill his shoes will be no easy task.

Like the other women, Joan participated in The Golden Bachelor with the hopes of winning Gerry's heart. Gerry was instantly interested in the striking blonde, and the two had some serious chemistry. Joan's journey on the show was cut short when a family emergency sent her packing. Joan's adult daughter had just had a baby and desperately needed her mother. Joan made the difficult decision to leave the show early, giving up on the once-in-a-lifetime chance to find love.

From the moment Leslie stepped out of the limousine on night one of The Golden Bachelor, it was clear Gerry was interested in getting to know her better. The two hit it off right away, and their relationship continued to grow as the season progressed. Though she was competing against many amazing women, Leslie made it to the final two and was favored to win over Theresa.

In the end, Gerry broke Leslie's heart, and there were plenty of intense moments between them during the season finale. Gerry seemed to lead Leslie on until the last moment, even telling her she was "the one." In an interview with Bachelor Happy Hour, Leslie struggled to say whether she respects Gerry. Obviously, Leslie continues to harbor negative feelings towards him and isn't over what happened between them on the show.

Leslie went on to admit that she hasn't been dating since her experience on the show.

Why The Golden Bachelorette Cast Joan

Leslie Wanted The Job

There are many reasons ABC selected Joan over Leslie, despite Leslie's popularity among fans. Producers may have felt Joan's trajectory on The Golden Bachelor makes her more interesting. The fact that she left early adds an element of mystery, and that it was for a noble reason also reflects well on her. Joan is also more outgoing and assertive than the shy, mild-mannered Leslie. Perhaps production thought Joan could communicate better on an emotional level with multiple men.

Another issue at hand is that Leslie continued to be angry at Gerry long after the season had ended. This suggested that perhaps Leslie wasn't over Gerry and not ready to date again. Seeing as she hasn't dated much since filming The Golden Bachelor, it makes sense that Leslie isn't ready for the role of The Golden Bachelorette.

The fact that Joan is a widow while Leslie is a two-time divorcee likely played a role in Joan getting The Golden Bachelorette role as well. Considering the inaugural season of The Golden Bachelor ended with a divorce, ABC would want to avoid the appearance of casting a lead with two divorces under her belt. Hopefully, Leslie will find love again and live happily ever after, but it won't be while leading the first season of The Golden Bachelorette.

The Golden Bachelorette debuts this fall on Wednesdays at 8 p.m. EDT on ABC.
