1 The Conners Season 6 Twist Sets Up Darlene's Perfect Ending In Season 7
Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for The Conners season 6, episode 12.
Summary Mark's decision to drop out of college opens up the opportunity for Darlene to pursue her dream of becoming a writer.
Financial hardships and family responsibilities have kept Darlene from her writing ambitions until now.
With Ben's insurance payout, Darlene may finally have a shot at living her dream by working on a magazine.
Although The Conners season 6 hasn’t solved all of the Roseanne heroine’s problems, Darlene’s future does seem brighter now that the sitcom has remembered an old plot of hers from decades ago. Between Roseanne’s original run, its revival, and its spinoff The Conners, Darlene has never had an easy time of it. Admittedly, no one in The Conners’ cast of characters has been without their struggles, but Darlene’s life has been particularly trying. Compared to her cheerier siblings, DJ and Becky, Darlene’s sardonic demeanor made her a black sheep throughout Roseanne. She also struggled with her mother over her relationship.
Darlene’s love interest, David Healy, was a troubled teen with an abusive mother whom the Conners ended up raising as their own. Although he and Darlene had two children together, he is unlikely to appear again in The Conners season 7. Their relationship failed after years of the couple struggling with poverty, and Darlene shouldered much of the responsibility of raising Mark and Harris on her own. Although she did end up happily married to The Conners hero Ben after all of these trials, Darlene was still unhappy in her career when season 6 of the spinoff began.

Mark’s Decision Saves Darlene From Her Cafeteria Job

Throughout season 6, Darlene has been stuck working in the college’s cafeteria to pay Mark’s tuition. In episode 12, “Flying, Applying and Rassling Gators,” Becky provided her sister with an unlikely blessing in disguise when she revealed that she had secretly sent Mark’s application to the University of Chicago. Mark had never applied to the school since he knew he couldn’t afford to attend the prestigious institution, but Becky revealed that his application was successful and Darlene passed this good news on to him. Mark initially struggled with the update, but eventually, he ended up changing his plans as a result.
Throughout Roseanne’s original run, Darlene harbored dreams of working as a writer when she grew up.
Mark’s decision to drop out and work for a year before attending the University of Chicago changes things for Darlene since it means she will no longer need to work at his college. While Darlene’s job as a cafeteria worker was hardly the saddest story The Conners ever told, it was frustrating when her previous work as a manager at Wellman’s Plastics was already a major compromise. Throughout Roseanne’s original run, Darlene harbored dreams of working as a writer when she grew up. Her path to becoming one hasn’t been this clear since season 4, episode 18, “This Old House.”

Financial Hardships And Family Responsibilities Held Up Darlene’s Ambitions

In Roseanne’s season 10 revival, Darlene revealed that the sacrifices she made to raise her kids led her to give up on a writing career, alongside the lack of promising job opportunities coming her way. She did work in publishing briefly, and she met Ben while working at his magazine. However, the magazine folded and Ben began working at his family’s hardware store, while Darlene was forced to give up on her dream again. In a rare stroke of luck for the family, Ben’s hardware store burning down gave him an insurance payout that allowed him to buy the magazine Hardware.
While Ben’s The Conners season 6 storyline might not seem all that fortunate, a well-timed insurance payout is about as lucky as the Conner clan ever gets. Ben’s new income could now allow him and Darlene to work together on a magazine again and, if the couple can keep this venture afloat, would mean that Roseanne’s heroine could finally live her dream. Darlene tried writing with her romantic partner once before in Roseanne when she and David worked on a comic together. However, David’s unreliable nature meant this plan was doomed from the outset, unlike Hardware magazine.
Darlene Becoming A Writer Would Be Her Perfect Ending In The Conners Season 7
This Long-Forgotten Roseanne Plot Is Overdue A Return

Two episodes before “Flying, Applying and Rassling Gators,” Ben got a regular column in Hardware magazine. One episode later, he had already used his insurance payout to buy the magazine. It seems pretty certain, considering Darlene and Ben met while running a magazine together, that her dream is making a comeback now that she is also free to quit her current job. The Conners season 6 risks repeating Roseanne’s worst story by making the titular family wealthy overnight, but there is a better outcome for Ben’s storyline.
If Darlene begins working with Ben on his magazine now that she can afford to quit her cafeteria job, her oldest dream can be revived before The Conners season 7 ends the series for good. It was a crushing blow when Roseanne’s revival revealed that Darlene had to give up on writing, but she is now in a position that her earlier story with David never offered her. As such, The Conners owes Roseanne’s heroine another, better chance to become a professional writer.
