After 47 Years, Darth Vader Flips One of His Most Iconic Quotes of All Time

Summary Darth Vader flips his iconic quote, "I find your lack of faith disturbing", by commending Lieutenant Pryde for his unwavering faith in his power in the Force.

Pryde's devotion may be misleading; he could betray Vader for the Emperor in the future - which is a conclusion that can be drawn from Pryde's unwavering loyalty to Palpatine in Rise of Skywalker.

The comic sets up suspense around Pryde's loyalty to Vader and potential betrayal for Emperor Palpatine.

Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Star Wars: Darth Vader #46! Darth Vader has no shortage of terrifyingly memorable quotes in Star Wars canon. From revealing to Luke Skywalker that he is his father, to telling Ezra Bridger that the young Jedi will die braver than most, Darth Vader seems to know exactly what to say in any given situation to make a lasting impact. And that includes this 47-year-old quote in question, which the Dark Lord of the Sith actually flipped during his most recent storyline.

In Star Wars: Darth Vader #46 by Greg Pak and Raffaele Ienco, Darth Vader and his Schism Imperial invade Exegol, steal Palpatine’s reserve of red kyberite, and decimate the Sith Eternal. While they haven’t made it off Exegol quite yet (as they still have to battle the Summa-Verminoth before they’re home free) there’s one member of the Schism Imperial who has total and complete faith in Darth Vader to get them off this world in one piece: Senior Lieutenant Pryde.

Close

Pryde joined the Schism Imperial not due to any hatred of Emperor Palpatine (as the group’s one mission is to have Vader usurp the Emperor), but because of his devotion to Darth Vader. Even when it seemed as though the Schism Imperial would be overpowered by the Sith Eternal in this issue, Pryde never lost faith in Vader, going so far as to prematurely celebrate victory, even when the Sith Eternal called upon the Summa-Verminoth to attack them. In response to Pryde’s optimism, Darth Vader tells the Lieutenant, “Your faith is impressive”.

“I Find Your Lack of Faith Disturbing”: Darth Vader Redefines His Iconic Quote By Flipping It

Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope

In A New Hope, Darth Vader uses his Force-choke ability to strangle an Imperial who questioned Darth Vader’s mastery of the Force, and even its usefulness as a whole. As Vader gives the man a brutal lesson, he utters the chilling quote, “I find your lack of faith disturbing”. Vader eventually lets the Imperial go at Tarkin’s request, but only after he makes his point abundantly clear.

Now that Darth Vader has flipped this quote - as it’s directed toward an Imperial with an overabundance of faith in Darth Vader and his mastery of the Force - the original quote takes on a whole new meaning.

Vader wasn’t angry that the Imperial was questioning the Force, as the original scene implied, he was ‘disturbed’ by the fact that he didn’t have faith in Darth Vader himself. Vader requires an almost religious level of devotion to his power from his subordinates, something the Imperial in A New Hope did not display, and something that Pryde exhibited in abundance.

Darth Vader Might Have Just Put His Faith in the Wrong Imperial

Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker

Darth Vader commends Lieutenant Pryde on his devotion, going so far as to flip his most iconic quote to make that point clear. However, it’s possible that Darth Vader has ironically put his own faith in the wrong Imperial follower. In Rise of Skywalker, Allegiant General Pryde tells Palpatine that he will serve him just as he did during the Empire’s reign. But, given that Pryde is currently on a team that’s actively trying to usurp Palpatine, that comment is in direct contrast with what fans are seeing in the comics - or is it?

Perhaps the Star Wars comics are working toward paying off General Pryde’s claim of being loyal to Palpatine during the age of the Empire by setting up a scenario where he’ll betray Darth Vader in favor of the Emperor. If that’s the case, then Darth Vader would have vaguely complimented Pryde for nothing, as the Imperial would have just been playing him to earn his trust, only to stab Vader in the back for his true master, the Emperor.

While the truth of Pryde’s allegiances remains to be seen, it appears at the moment that the Imperial is truly devoted to Darth Vader, something the Dark Lord of the Sith audibly noticed when he flipped his most iconic Star Wars quote after 47 years.
