Summary Baldur's Gate 3 players can become Shades with a new mod, gaining unique abilities and weaknesses for a more immersive experience.
Mods like "Power of the Shadows" add depth to the game's role-playing systems by introducing new abilities for players to explore.
While most mods are currently only available on PC, official mod support for the console version will soon provide new content for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S players.
Baldur's Gate 3 players looking to spice up their next playthrough with some strange but interesting mechanics are in luck because a new mod transforms Tav into a Shade. Although there are already plenty of different races and classes to pick from when starting Larian Studios' adventure, the game's community hasn't stopped creating custom content to create an even more immersive Dungeons & Dragons experience. Many mods have introduced new spells and abilities into the games but the most exciting ones usually flesh out the already shockingly robust role-playing systems.
Posted to Nexus Mods and created by Lux_Aurea, the "Power of the Shadows" mod grants players the abilities and weaknesses of a Shade, making for some interesting challenges. Characters who become such an entity are strengthed when in shadow and weakened when exposed to light. When under the cover of darkness, they gain impressive bonuses like a +2 increase to all base ability scores and Advantage on all attack rolls, but in light they suffer a -2 to all ability stats and all Saving Throws must be rolled with a -4 modifier.

What Are Shades In DnD?
Dating all the way back to Dungeons & Dragons' first edition, Shades are humanoids who have managed to become one with "shadowstuff," or merging with the Plane of Shadow. These beings are said to have sacrificed their souls in the pursuit of endless power, and supposedly cannot age or die given their partly ephemeral nature. Shades are widely considered to be driven by evil goals but they're not all inherently bad, often falling into trouble due to the corrupting nature of their abilities and close associations to those more tempted by sinister forms of magic.
Baldur's Gate 3 might not be able to provide that kind of in-depth flavor when it comes to playing as a modded Shade, but in terms of mechanics, the add-on is very impressive. Aside from the aformentioned bonuses, Shades also gain Superior Darkvision in any kind of lighting and are completely immune to the Sleep and Poison status effects. Perhaps the most exciting part of the mod is the ability to summon a Shadow Mastiff at Level 4, a might fine companion.
Larian Studios may have largely finished its work on Baldur's Gate 3 but the game's community is still dedicated to expanding the experience. While most of the mods are currently only available to players on PC, the developer has confirmed that it will introduce official mod support for the console version, meaning PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S players will soon gain access to a whole new world of content. This update may have been announced a few months ago but there's currently no word on when it will arrive.
