The Chan brothers' experience in composing for animation sets the stage for an exciting and innovative soundtrack in the upcoming series.
The Fairly OddParents: A New Wish is a return to the world of one of Nickelodeon’s most beloved and long-running series. The third entry in the franchise (The Fairly OddParents: Fairly Odder ran for thirteen episodes in 2022), The Fairly OddParents: A New Wish boasts an updated animation style and introduces a new grandchild in Hazel Wells, a 10-year-old girl played by Ashleigh Crystal Hairston. The OddParents themselves, however, have not changed, with voice actors Darn Norris and Susanne Blakeslee returning as Cosmo and Wanda once again.
Screen Rant is happy to share a clip from The Fairly OddParents: A New Wish tied to the exciting announcement that Caleb and Brian Chan have composed the musical score for the series. The pair have previously scored Alert: Missing Persons Unit, Allegiance, and other Nickelodeon projects like The Thundermans Return. Their music is the driving force behind the clip below from The Fairly OddParents: A New Wish, which sees Cosmo and Wanda on the brink of coming out of retirement to help young Hazel. Why Caleb & Brian Chan Are Perfect For The Fairly OddParents: A New Wish
Close
As heard in the clip above, Caleb and Brian Chan have managed to capture the unique feel of the world of The Fairly OddParents, which may have been helped by the fact they’ve been familiar with the series since the beginning. The pair are quick to reflect on the fact that they were of the perfect age to appreciate the best Nickelodeon shows of the 2000s, of which The Fairly OddParents was one. Here’s what they had to say on the subject:
Caleb and Brian Chan: It’s special to be a part of something that has had cultural significance for a couple of decades. The original Fairly OddParents was on TV all the time in our youth and to see it come back now that we have kids of our own is truly a generational gift. We worked with an amazing team of showrunners who were exceptionally imaginative and trusting, so despite the weight of expectation, it has been creatively freeing and incredibly enjoyable.
The Fairly OddParents: A New Wish debuts with a fresh and exciting art style that suits a world of hyper-stylized animated movies, and the music in the clip above proves that the Chan brothers have struck the right balance of old and new in their score. This tracks given the varied musical background of Caleb and Brian Chen—the duo have written everything from a medieval-orchestral-folk score (Team Zenko Go) to dreamy instrumental albums for their side project Heis. They said the following about finding a familiar, yet progressive, style for The Fairly OddParents: A New Wish:
Caleb and Brian Chan: The score is like riding on a fun speed boat that periodically gets capsized by waves of absurdity. It’s traditional animation scoring meets a good dose of “what if we did this?” In the same way the new show departs from the classic series, we held on to certain aspects of the original and developed new ideas unique to this sequel. Time has passed so the stylistic Fairly OddParents big band swing now has a more contemporary feel. We were also given the freedom to experiment with other genres when the moment called for it; like scoring an obnoxious tech-mogul heir, forlorn 90s anime romance, epic rock paper scissors battles, aliens negotiating the fate of pizza, and many more outlandish scenarios.
The pair are also highly experienced in the unique world of composing for animation. Before the duo began writing music for one of Nickelodeon’s best duos, they scored the animated series Hatchimals: Adventures in Hatchtopia, Team Zenko Go, Angry Birds: Summer Madness, and Pinecone & Pony. Based on their wealth of experience in the field and the music in the clip above, it will no doubt be exciting to hear what else Caleb and Brian Chan have cooked up for The Fairly OddParents: A New Wish.
The Fairly OddParents: A New Wish premieres May 20 on Nickelodeon.
