Audiences could once again see Hewitt’s Julie James going head-to-head with Neve Campbell’s Sidney Prescott to determine exactly who is horror’s ultimate final girl.

While slasher movies owe their origins to films made decades before 1997’s I Know What You Did Last Summer, the late 1990s were considered a creative renaissance for the horror genre. Ignited by the success of 1996’s Scream, Hollywood studios would follow suit with a wide assortment of their slasher movies helmed by the high-profile teen idols of the day.

Even though most of those films would fail to capture even a fraction of the critical and commercial success of Wes Craven’s Scream, the original I Know What You Did Last Summer stands as one of the more successful attempts to capitalize on the genre’s sudden resurgence. Moreover, it also benefited from a script penned by Scream creator and screenwriter, Kevin Williamson. Now, with the franchise’s latest legacy sequel securing a 2025 release date, audiences could once again see Hewitt’s Julie James going head-to-head with Neve Campbell’s Sidney Prescott to determine exactly who is horror’s ultimate final girl.

With Scream 7 retooling its premise to focus on Campbell’s return to the franchise, and I Know What You Did Last Summer intent on bringing Hewitt back, a potential 2025 box-office showdown could be an exciting prospect for horror fans. Hewitt's return has not been confirmed, but she has expressed interest in returning for the sequel. Of course, Scream 7 is still yet to receive its official release date, but the potential for a direct clash between the two horror franchises remains a thrilling possibility.
