The saga of John Wick is getting even larger with the announcement of a Caine spinoff that will follow a new character on their own action-packed adventure. Beginning in 2014, the John Wick series concerns the titular character, played by Keanu Reeves, who embarks on various missions of revenge against the criminal underworld. Despite their simple premise, the movies in the explosive franchise are noted for their stylish execution and larger-than-life action sequences. Each film has built upon the last, and John Wick is a certified moneymaker.

John Wick: Chapter 4 was not only the biggest and baddest of the series thus far, but the ending of Wick's story was seemingly told. While plans are in place to keep the franchise going with Reeve's eponymous butt-kicker, the fourth installment also introduced a host of fascinating characters who could carry their own action spinoffs. With that in mind, Hong Kong actor Donnie Yen stole the show in Chapter 4 as the blind assassin Caine, and the latest development reveals that the Ip Man star is set to become the next John Wick character to get as standalone movie.

Even as rumbling of a John Wick 5 are happening all over Hollywood, it has now been confirmed that a John Wick spinoff starring Donnie Yen's Caine is in the works. Though many details are still unknown about the newly-announced spinoff, certain key items have been revealed that make it an intriguing off-shoot of the decade-old Keanu Reeves franchise. Ip Man star Donnie Yen is set to return as the lead character, and the film has yet to secure a director.

Another spinoff entitled John Wick Presents: Ballerina is slated to premiere on June 6, 2025.

On the production end, the John Wick Caine spinoff is set to begin filming in Yen's native Hong Kong in 2025, but a release date is still a long ways off. Franchise director Chad Stahelski isn't helming the film but he is developing the spinoff for Lionsgate, and the elusive script will be penned by Robert Askins of The Umbrella Academy fame.

So far, the only name attached to the cast of the John Wick Caine spinoff is Donnie Yen who will be returning to play blind assassin Caine. The accomplished hitman appeared in John Wick 4 where he was forced to attempt to kill Reeves' John Wick. Caine different plans and instead went after his employer and get a measure of revenge for himself. The chances of other notable John Wick figures returning is quite high, and even Reeves himself could don the suit once again. However, until more details emerge, any cast information beyond Yen is pure speculation.

With so many details about the film still being kept under wraps, it isn't exactly clear where the Caine spinoff fits into the John Wick timeline. However, the most logical place would be in the immediate aftermath of John Wick: Chapter 4 which teased more of Caine's story in a post-credits sequence. Caine successful eliminated his employer, Hiroyuki Sanada's Shimazu, but that inspired Shimazu's daughter Akira (Rina Sawayama) to swear revenge against the blind assassin.

If the John Wick Caine spinoff is a straightforward continuation of Chapter 4, the story could see Akira and Caine fighting it out as the former attempts to get revenge on the latter. On the other hand, any number of events could happen that force the two together in a case of strange bedfellows, and it would make for a refreshing change of pace. Since the John Wick franchise is comprised of a series of revenge stories, Akira's quest for blood will probably continue the trend in the forthcoming Caine spinoff.
