Masashi Kishimoto's ninja epic manga, Naruto, concluded in 2015 and continued with the Boruto series, but there are at least ten lingering mysteries about the series fans still think about years later. Some of the Naruto series's unanswered questions spawned from its controversial addition of the god-like Kaguya near the story's ending, while others related to Naruto's upbringing had been present since the beginning. With Naruto officially regarded as the world's most popular show in particular demographics, more than a few fans are curious about the series' 10 biggest mysteries.

10 How Did Akatsuki's Hidan Gain His Immortality?

The Jashinist Cult Has Powerful Secrets

Close

Before attempting to devastate Naruto in their final battle, Sasuke proclaimed that he planned to use his overwhelming strength to force the world into peace, and in order to keep control, several methods of attaining immortality could be used. Fans saw different methods of prolonging one's life in the Naruto world, but Akatsuki member Hidan had achieved a level of immortality that allowed him to survive horrifically fatal injuries, including being decapitated. Because he gained the ability to survive any attack, it's fair to wonder how he gained the broken ability and if it really comes from an evil god.

Information about Hidan and other fascinating members of Akatsuki is revealed in Naruto Hiden light novels and databooks that have provided extra insights into the Naruto universe. The Immortal Butcher had been a blood-thirsty ninja since a young age, and he'd found a proper outlet for his violent tendencies with a clan that worshiped an evil god named Jashin. Practitioners in the cult believed they must murder others to appease their god. Experimenting with the clan's secret techniques and sacrificial rituals gave Hidan his immortality, but there has been no evidence that the god Jashin exists.

While Hidan can survive any attack, he can die from malnutrition.

9 Who is the Mysterious Figure in Kaguya's Dimension?

The Manga Included A Shadowy Onlooker In Kaguya's High-Gravity Dimension

Kaguya's appearance was a dramatic shift in the Fourth Shinobi War and the dimensions for Naruto, Sasuke, Sakura, Obito, and Kakashi. Being the origin of all chakra, the otherworldy foe had vast reserves of power that enabled her to teleport herself and others to different dimensions of her creation. One such place had increased gravity, while others included deadly weather extremes. Each space was colossal in size, and one particular panel in Kishimoto's Naruto chapter #687 made it seem like there was a mysterious figure in Kaguya's dimension that was never explained.

Speculation about the mysterious figure in Kaguya's heavy gravity dimension has created several entertaining theories. Theories have ranged from another Ōtsutsuki, a time traveler, the owner of Ichiraku Ramen, or even an awkward-shaped rock. However, the least exciting answer is likely the truth, being that the mysterious figure in Kaguya's dimension is Sakura. She was previously seen with Obito on the cliff edge before he jumped down to save Naruto. She's too far away to have discernable features, but from that angle, it makes sense that it's Sakura and not an ominous onlooker from an alien dimension.

8 Is Peace Maintained Between The Ninja Villages After The Fourth Shinobi War?

War Brought The World Together

Close

For the first time in the shinobi world's bloody history, all five of the most prominent ninja villages put aside their differences against a common enemy during the Fourth Shinobi War. Many lives were lost from each of the powerful villages, but thanks to their incredible efforts, the war was won, and life was able to return to a form of normalcy. Thankfully, the sacrifices and contributions of each village's shinobi were not forgotten, and the Shinobi Union was formed, which changed how ninja society operated forever.

Unlike the Allied Forces, which comprised the Five Shinobi villages and the Land of Iron's samurai, the Shinobi Union welcomed any Hidden Village that wanted to contribute. The Union accepts shinobi missions and designates them to whichever shinobi from whichever village is most suited to accomplish it, drastically helping reduce infighting between the Villages. With Shikamaru as the Shinobi Union's chief organizer, it's no surprise it would be successful in helping keep the peace between countries that were at consistent war against each other for decades.

7 Was Naruto's Ultimate Villain, Kaguya Ōtsutsuki, An Alien?

The Ōtsutsuki Are An Ancient Race Of Planet Devouring Celestial Beings

Close

The incredibly shocking betrayal of Black Zetzu caught Madara and audiences off guard with a twist that saw the resurrection of Kaguya Ōtsutsuki, the Progenitor of Chakra. As the first being who introduced chakra to the world, Kaguya was regarded as a Goddess who'd been sealed away by her two sons long ago after she'd lost faith in humanity and attempted to enslave the planet. At one point, Kaguya had fallen in love with a human and strove for a life of peace, a goal very different from the one her clan of cosmic conquerors had in mind.

Although the series had effectively built Madara up to be the final villain of the Naruto franchise, controversially the addition of Kaguya provided a lot of fuel for the Boruto sequel series to expand upon. More information about the Rabbit Goddess and the Ōtsutsuki clan is revealed in the sequel series and Naruto Shippuden filler episodes. The Ōtsutsuki clan are, in fact, aliens who have traveled the cosmos in hopes of devouring the life energy of advanced civilizations to evolve, a goal Kaguya betrayed in her self-interests.

6 Why Was Kaguya Trying To Build An Army Of Zetsu?

The Zetsu's Used In The Fourth Shinobi War Were Previous Victims Of Kaguya's Infinite Tsukuyomi

Close

Kaguya is the origin of all chakra from the Naruto world who'd previously been sealed after attempting to turn the entire human race into a White Zetsu army. The Boruto series revealed that members of the alien Otsutsuki clan travel in pairs, with one sacrificing themselves in a ritual so the other can evolve. Kaguya betrayed her clan and even tried to live a peaceful life with humanity, but it was not to be. After suffering from betrayal and loss, Kaguya's faith in humanity was gone, and she decided to rule as the Rabbit Goddess with her fearsome chakra.

Before going mad with power, Kaguya had fallen in love with a human and gave birth to two sons. They, too, could use chakra and had to use it against their mother when she threatened to turn the entire world into White Zetsus. It's clear from events of the Boruto series that Kaguya expected other Otsutsuki members to arrive on Earth and bring retribution for her betrayal. After seeing what the celestial beings are capable of, it is no wonder she went to such lengths to prepare to defend herself.

After the ending of the Naruto series, Sasuke took it upon himself to travel in search of more information as to why Kaguya was building her army.

During the Fourth Shinobi War, Obito and Black Zetzu used an army of 100,000 White Zetzus against the Shinobi Alliance. The twisted truth is that they are what's left of people who'd previously been trapped in Kaguya's Infinite Tsukuyomi. After years of having their life force drained by the roots of the God Tree, all that's left of its victims are the husks known as the White Zetsu. With the world's entire population converted into an army, Kaguya could have overwhelmed Otsutsuki invaders with sheer numbers.

5 Do Naruto and Sasuke Still Have Their Sage of the Six Paths Powers?

Even The Godly Six Paths Abilities Have Their Limits

Close

During the end of the Fourth Shinobi War, Naruto and Sasuke effectively die and are resurrected. Thanks to their allies and the processes in which they were brought back to the world of the living, the two brothers in arms unlocked new abilities befitting the Sage of the Six Paths. Naruto gained his own Six Paths form by having chakra from each Tailed-Beast, while Sasuke unlocked a Rinnegan by combining his Uchiha chakra with Senju chakra that Kabuto gave him to heal from being stabbed through the heart. They also received a small gift from a shinobi god.

While Naruto and Sasuke were out of commission, they were visited by Hagoromo, the original Sage of the Six Paths, who granted them the means to seal Kaguya and save the world. After the Rabbit Goddess was sealed and Naruto and Sasuke had their hand-destroying final battle, it was unclear how much of the Sage of the Six Paths powers still resided in the two. The ultimate answer is debatable, but it makes sense that Naruto and Sasuke used up many of the Six Paths powers in the series final battles but can still use some of the abilities.

Related Naruto's Rinnegan Explained: How Madara Unlocked Them And Their Powers Few ninjas in the Naruto universe gained control of the Sharingan, but even fewer obtained the Rinnegan, which is as powerful as it is complex.

For plot conveniences, Naruto and Sasuke's considerable abilities have seemingly been lessened throughout the sequel's storyline so its new characters could shine. This explains why Sasuke doesn't use his Rinnegan abilities and why he runs out of chakra so often in Boruto. On the other hand, Naruto hasn't used the ultimate healing abilities he used on Guy and Kakashi again, but has been shown capable of using multiple chakra types that he was gifted from other tailed-beasts. It stands to reason that Naruto and Sasuke still have some Six Paths abilities, but not all of them could be used continuously.

4 What happened to Naruto's Uzumaki clan?

Close

Like the Senju and Uchiha clans who helped form the Village Hidden in the Leaves, the Uzumaki clan was a once prominent force that had their own advanced village. The clan that eventually spawned shinobi, like Naruto's mother, Kushina, and Sasuke's companion, Karin, were once regarded as one of the strongest in the world. They resided in a prosperous shinobi village known as the Land of Whirlpools and were heavily respected and feared for their specialty in sealing jutsus. The fear eventually led to their village's destruction and the near genocide of the entire clan.

In 2014, a sixth Naruto supplementary guidebook from series author Masashi Kishimoto again provided fascinating details about the series. One detail provided insight into the destruction of the Uzumaki clan's village that occurred not long after a young Kushina was transferred to Konoha. Due to the Uzumaki clan's powerful sealing techniques, other nations often hired them in times of war. Their notable abilities gained the wrong kind of attention and were deemed too strong, so a coordinated attack from other villages destroyed the Land of Whirlpools, and the surviving Uzumaki scattered.

After the Fourth Shinobi War, the Uzumaki Clan was officially active again with Konoha as it's home.

3 How Did The First Hokage, Hashirama Senju, Die?

Each Hokage Met Honorable Ends, But One's Final Moments Are A Mystery

Close

Hashirama Senju was regarded as the strongest shinobi in the Naruto series history, which is why so many fans are curious about how the First Hokage died. His regeneration and large-scale offensive abilities made him an unstoppable force, but even he was not invincible. He'd taken substantial damage during his climatic battle against Madara, and several of the world's most powerful jutsu require its users to sacrifice their lifespan to cast. It's entirely possible that his jutsu may have cut his lifespan short, or he may have died from disease as other powerful shinobi like Itachi and Kimimaro did.

It's fairly well-known how the Third and Fourth Hokages met their ends, while the Second sacrificed himself as a decoy to save Danzo and a young Third Hokage during the First Shinobi War. Because the deaths of the prominent figures have been revealed, the lack of details surrounding Hashirama's end is one of the Naruto series's unresolved mysteries. It's possible that Kishimoto did not share it for a good reason, that he forgot to include it in the story, or that it was an uneventful ending for the figure many regarded as a God of Shinobi.

2 Why Wasn't Naruto Raised By Jiraiya or The Third Hokage?

Naruto's Loneliness May Have Protected Him From Revenge

Close

Flashbacks with Naruto's parents revealed that Jiraiya had been named his godfather and that Kushina specifically asked The Third Hokage to care for her son before she died. This is why it's a frustrating mystery as to why the orphan grew up with such a miserable and lonely existence in the Hidden Leaf Village. Both figures seemingly did not uphold the responsibilities the late Minato and Kushina had placed on them, but there are good reasons why Jiraiya and the Hokage did not raise Naruto as his parents had hoped. Reasons that may have kept Naruto alive.

As the series progresses, it becomes clear that people housing Tailed-Beast spirits were often targets of other shinobi villages and dangerous foes like the Akatsuki organization. The likely reason that Naruto was paid no favoritism and took on his mother's name instead of his father's was to keep him concealed from those wishing him harm or those seeking to take the Nine-Tails. Still, Naruto had a home, food, and clothing, which may have come from the Third Hokage. Naruto had a lonely upbringing but was given the bare necessities to survive.

In one of the most emotional episodes of the Naruto Shippuden series, Jiraiya is on his deathbed recounting special moments in his life. Then it's revealed that Naruto was named after the main character in Jiraiya's first book and that he'd been named the godfather. Still, as a Sannin of the Hidden Leaf, Jiraiya was consistently traveling and acting as a spy for the village. Such a lifestyle was not the best environment to raise a child, especially one that harbored the Nine-Tails spirit and might be hunted by those who held a grudge against the infamously deadly Fourth Hokage.

1 Is Boruto All Part Of Naruto's Infinite Tsukuyomi Dream?

Everything Worked Out For Naruto, Almost Like It Was All A Dream

Close

Despite the efforts of the Shinobi Alliance, Guy's iconic 8-gates assault, and Naruto and Sasuke's incredible power-ups, Madara succeeded in his goal of casting the Infinite Tsukuyomi. The ultimate genjutsu was cast on the world's entire population and put them in a perfect dream while their life force was slowly drained. Thanks to Sasuke's Susanoo, he, Naruto, Sakura, Kakashi, and Obito were not affected by the spell, or at least that's what the series seemed to portray.

A common theory suggests that Naruto was caught in the Infinite Tsukuyomi, and everything at the end of the series and the Boruto storyline are part of his dream. If that were the case, everything that has happened in the Boruto series and its large cast of new characters that Naruto wouldn't have been able to dream up would not have happened and wouldn't matter. Naruto is not stuck in Madara's genjutsu because if he was, it would ultimately betray all the character development and life-changing life lessons the series finale provided.
