At her former size, there was simply less trendy clothing readily available, so Tammy had to settle for whatever she could find. Now that Tammy is slim enough to find options in almost any clothing store, she has been making the most of her newfound styling options. In December 2023, Tammy posted an Instagram carousel of photos in which she's wearing an ultra-trendy black leather motorcycle jacket.

In February 2024, Tammy's friend, Haley Michelle, posted a TikTok in which she struts in slow motion with Tammy and Amy. TikTok account thebudgetballet posted a season 1 clip of Tammy and Amy, at their heaviest, talking to a therapist about their dietary habits. They tell the therapist that they each drink eight to 12 cans of soda, which they lovingly refer to as "sodie", per day.

The Slaton sisters explain that, when they were younger, their mother told them that if they "ate sugar," and drank diet coke afterward, it would "cancel out the sugar."

It's no wonder that Tammy and Amy have struggled with their weight since childhood. The 1000-lb Sisters stars told People that they attribute their early weight gain to genetics, emotional eating, and socioeconomic factors. “I’ve always had a weight issue," Tammy said. "I was born 9 lbs. 10 oz., and then I just kept gaining." “Our whole family’s big,” Amy added. The type of food available to them was also an issue. Their mother worked three jobs to support them and their three siblings, so they often had to prepare their own meals.

Their grandmother helped their mother raise them and, when their grandmother died in 1999, Amy and Tammy turned to food to fill the emotional void.

Tammy and Amy aren't the only members of the Slaton family who have lost weight over the years. Their brother, Chris Combs, had bariatric surgery during season 3 and lost over 150 pounds.
