DC's New Space Pirates Are an Idea Too Good to Just Use Once

Summary DC's newest villains, the "piratesites" are a welcome addition to the publisher's continually expanding Universe, offering a fresh and unique concept that will hopefully feature more in future outer space adventures.

Sinister Sons #4 introduces these dynamic villains, making the cosmos a weirder and more dangerous place – exploring a new concept that is too fun to simply be a one-off.

The piratesites' design and backstory add immediate personality to these character, making them great potential recurring foes for Green Lanterns and other DC space travelers.

Warning! Contains Spoilers For Sinister Sons #4!

The DC Universe is ever expanding, with the most recent cosmic introduction being the "piratesites" – a concept that has so much potential that the publisher absolutely has to explore it beyond a single, one-off appearance. Debuting in the most recent issue of the Sinister Sons miniseries, these microscopic swashbucklers are one of the most unique DC creations in years.

Sinister Sons #4 continues what has been among DC's top series this year. With the eponymous characters, the Sinister Sons, still trapped inside a giant space whale, their problems get even worse, as the whale is attacked by piratesites. This is the first time the piratesites have been seen, and hopefully, it won't be the last.

The piratesites are full of personality, with designs that make them stand out. The captain remarks that he's been searching for the space whale for decades, leaving no reason why their chase couldn't continue into the far reaches of space.

As the Green Lanterns are a peacekeeping force for the universe, it makes sense they'd go up against poachers like the piratesites.

The DC Universe is absolutely huge and there are tons of bizarre aliens among its stars. There have been living planets that have become Green Lanterns, space cabs that fly between planets, and much more. There's no reason that the piratesites should be limited to one planet. If they want to go after the space whale, it'd be perfectly in tune with the universe for their ship to be able to travel across planets. This would even make them a regular enemy of Green Lanterns. As the Green Lanterns are a peacekeeping force for the universe, it makes sense they'd go up against poachers like the piratesites.

DC often treats their universe as just an extended part of nature. Instead of a mostly empty vacuum, like in real life, the DC cosmos has tons of alien fauna, and other things that roam space. From the terrifying Suneaters to the iconic space dolphins. It makes perfect sense that there would be criminals willing to hunt these beings for profit, which would make a perfect reason for the piratesites to continue showing up, as a threat to either the Green Lanterns, or anyone just traveling through space.

The piratesites would be great recurring villains for DC's outer space stories, offering a unique, dynamic new concept that has already made the DC Comics cosmos a weirder, more dangerous place, in just a single appearance.

The Piratesites Perfectly Spice Up Space

Usually, when characters need to get from one location to another in outer space, they simply go there. Either by ship, flight, or even teleportation. There aren't many stakes or anything dangerous about it. Even when Superman got lost in space, the threat was the fact he didn't know where he was, not what was actually in outer space. The piratesites would be great recurring villains for DC's outer space stories, offering a unique, dynamic new concept that has already made the DC Comics cosmos a weirder, more dangerous place, in just a single appearance.
