Secret Stardew Valley 1.6 Change Makes Its Most Shy Character More Sociable

Secret Stardew Valley 1.6 Change Makes Its Most Shy Character More Sociable

Summary Players have always had a soft spot for underrated NPCs like Hat Mouse, Krobus, and the Dwarf in Stardew Valley.

In the 1.6 update, players can find the Dwarf leaving the mines for the first time at the Stardew Valley Fair.

Despite being a minor character normally confined to one location, the Dwarf has an extensive backstory players can discover.

Though Stardew Valley is filled with plenty of romanceable villagers and NPCs to befriend, there are certain underrated NPCs players have always had a soft spot for. There’s the Hat Mouse, selling hats out of the decrepit building to the south of Cindersnap Forest; Krobus, who runs a shop out of the town’s sewers; and the Dwarf, who hides in the mines. These characters don’t often interact with the townspeople, instead making their relationship with the character a special one – though it seems the changes in the 1.6 update has made one of those characters a bit more sociable.

In a Reddit post, user Lupyx_of_Wallachia spotted the Dwarf hiding out at the Stardew Valley Fair. The fair, which takes place on the 16th day of Fall every year, features all the usual townsfolk, as well as a few new faces who visit from out of town. But tucked in a corner behind the shop, the Dwarf seems to have emerged from their stationary shop in the mines to view the festival.

By picking a careful path through the barrels and other items in the way, the player can actually go over and talk to the Dwarf. This is the first time players have ever seen the NPC leave their regular location, suggesting that this is a new addition made as part of the 1.6 update.

There’s Only One Other Instance Where The Dwarf Leaves The Mines

Unless The Player Takes The Dwarf To The Movies

Until the recent update, there was only one other instance where the player would find the Dwarf outside their little shop in the mines, selling bombs at a more expensive rate than they cost to make (even dwarves need to get their bag, apparently). Once a player reaches 50 friendship points with the Dwarf, they will briefly leave the mines to confront Krobus in the sewers, an encounter that the player gets to witness unfold.

The dwarves and the Shadow People have a long-standing conflict. The Shadow People were supposedly driven from their land by the dwarves, resulting in a violent fight that took the rest of the Dwarf’s family, leaving them essentially alone. Once the player has reached 50 friendship points with the Dwarf, they’ll encounter the two beings fighting in the sewers.

Though Krobus attempts to apologize for the Shadow People’s actions, the two attempt to physically fight each other. It’s only when the Wizard shows up and comes between them that they stop, reaching a truce after he reminds them the “Elemental Wars are long finished” and casts a Seal of Promise over them.

Beyond this, players will have to visit the Dawrf in the mines if they want to speak with them. That said, like Krobus, the Dwarf can be convinced to temporarily leave their post and attend a movie with the player, by presenting them with a movie ticket once the theater is set up after closing the Joja Mart. Though this is just a small change made to the minor NPC in Stardew Valley, it suggests the possibility that ConcernedApe may bring the Dwarf further out of their shell as more updates are released.
