Kerry's coin in The Iron Claw has a deeper meaning in the film's afterlife scene. The Iron Claw chronicles the tragic true story of the Von Erich brothers, who became one of the most legendary families in the history of professional wrestling. Zac Efron leads an exceptional cast in The Iron Claw as Kevin Von Erich, the second-born son and last living of the five Von Erich brothers. Sean Durkin's film has been celebrated as one of the best wrestling movies ever made despite getting snubbed at the 2024 Oscars.
As part of a family plagued by tragedy and a self-proclaimed curse, Kerry Von Erich, played by Jeremy Allen White, was dealt one of the hardest blows. After getting robbed of his opportunity to compete in the 1980 Summer Olympics due to an unprecedented United States boycott of the games, Kerry eventually got into a terrible motorcycle accident which resulted in him getting his right foot amputated, as depicted in The Iron Claw. Kerry died by suicide and joined three of his brothers in a profound afterlife scene.

Kerry's Coin Connects To Kevin's Fate In The Iron Claw
The coin acknowledged Kevin as the last Von Erich brother remaining
During The Iron Claw, Fritz Von Erich, the patriarch of the wrestling family, flipped a coin to decide who would compete for the title of the NWA World Champion. It was also to secure a victory in honor of David, who died during a professional wrestling tour in Japan. The coin is flipped in the air by Fritz, although it is never directly shown which side it landed on. It's implied that the coin must have landed on heads, since Fritz told his two sons, "Heads for Kerry. Tails for Kevin."
In Kerry's afterlife scene, he is wading on a serene lake in a rowboat. He puts his father's coin down, tails side up. This was a touching way of Kerry acknowledging that his time was up and it was now completely up to Kevin to continue the Von Erich family legacy, since he had become the last Von Erich brother remaining. Kevin continued wrestling and retired in 1995, appearing only in brief guest spots in 2017 and 2023. Two of his children, Ross and Marshall, currently compete in the All Elite Wrestling promotion.

How Kerry's Coin In The Iron Claw's Afterlife Scene Connects To River Styx In Greek Mythology

Kerry having the coin in the afterlife scene also draws connections to the River Styx in Greek mythology, which is the river that leads to the underworld, or Hades, where the souls of the dead reside. According to Greek legend, the ferryman of the River Styx, Charon, is paid an obol, a type of Greek coin, to allow passage on the river to the underworld. While the tail side of the coin acts as a "passing of the baton" to Kevin, it also represents Kerry relinquishing Fritz's control over his fate in The Iron Claw.
