Spy x Family has a penchant for being surprisingly dark despite its wholesome family-friendly premise and the latest chapter teases Anya's origins may be much darker than fans could have ever imagined. While Spy x Family has revealed Loid's backstory and even some of Yor's, Anya's origins and the source of her psychic powers continue to be a mystery despite the series approaching a hundred chapters. That said, the newest chapter drops a subtle hint about Anya's tragic past.

In chapter #98, Professor Henderson and Martha are seen talking about the ongoing war when one of the students in the room mentions a rumor about how human experiments are being conducted on prisoners of war. This could be a subtle hint that Anya may have been a prisoner of war at one of these facilities that may have remained active even during the present Cold War between Ostania and Westalis.

Given that Anya is only five and that her oldest memories seem to be of the laboratory and the scientists there, it is possible that Anya was separated from her real parents as an infant. Anya had to have been at least three years old to be able to remember the laboratory as vividly as she does in chapter #1. Anya being a prisoner of war would certainly complicate the dynamic in the Forger household even further, perhaps even setting up the family as a microcosm of the real world.

Though the latest chapter does not specify which side exactly is conducting these experiments, Ostania's involvement in such activities was already confirmed back in chapter #31 when Loid was investigating a military official named Erik Zacharis. Though it is assumed that Ostania's experiments ceased after the new government took over, it is possible that these laboratories were secretly funded by the National Unity Party, much like Project Apple where Bond was experimented on.

Project Apple aimed to create highly intelligent animals like Bond for military purposes. It is very likely that the project behind the experiments conducted on Anya also had a similar goal, as the scientists are seen telling Anya to study and learn how to use her powers for the sake of world peace during the flashback. If these cruelties were rationalized in the name of world peace, then it isn't much of a stretch to assume that Ostania would even resort to secretly taking prisoners of war for the purpose.

A subtle detail from Bond's backstory further proves the link between the experiments conducted on Anya and Project Apple in the form of a spectacled scientist with a cowlick over his forehead who is seen in both flashbacks. Some fan theories have speculated that the scientist in question could be related to Donovan Desmond or even be a young Donovan. However, the latter does not make much sense given Anya and Bond's young ages and the fact that Donovan Desmond appears much more aged in the present.

Will Anya's Origins Ever Be Uncovered?

Other than her recent confession to Damian, Anya has managed to keep her powers a secret even in the most dire situations, making it unlikely that her powers will be revealed any time soon. However, her tragic origins may be a different matter entirely. All that the series has revealed thus far is that Anya escaped the laboratory at some point, and while there is no doubt the truth will come to light sometime or another, it will surely be a heartbreaking scene to witness, especially if Anya was subjected to anything like the cruel procedures carried out on Bond.

The Forger family itself would become a perfect microcosm of the pointless war between Ostania and Westalis.

While it may be difficult, it wouldn't be entirely impossible for Loid to track down or stumble upon Anya's past, but this revelation would likely shake the foundations of the Forger family to the core. Thematically, it would be fitting for Anya to be an innocent victim of the conflict between the two nations that Yor and Loid each represent. The Forger family itself would become a perfect microcosm of the pointless war between Ostania and Westalis and the revelation of Anya's needless suffering might be the catalyst that finally urges Loid and Yor to put aside their allegiances and work together to maintain peace in the real world as well as their mock family.

Overall, Spy x Family is at its core a nuanced discussion of the pointlessness of war and it is through tragic origin stories like that of Professor Henderson, Loid, Yor, and even Anya, that Tatsuya Endo continues to reiterate this point. As one of Spy x Family's titular characters, Anya's past will no doubt play a major role in the story as well as in highlighting the series' main themes. If Loid's past was any indication, fans can likely expect Anya's backstory to be even sadder, though hopes of a happy ending may provide some solace when the time does come around.
