Does The Golden Bachelor Franchise Still Have Credibility After Gerry & Theresa Split?
Summary Gerry and Theresa's split raised doubts about The Golden Bachelor's credibility, citing deep-rooted incompatibility.
Gerry formed authentic connections with many cast members, but marrying Theresa too soon devalued the show.
The show is still new and needs more seasons to establish itself and redeem from past failed connections.
After the original The Golden Bachelor couple Gerry Turner and Theresa Nist's recent split, the franchise's credibility is in question. 72-year-old Gerry was Bachelor Nation's first senior lead, and he won over reality TV fans' hearts with his charm, sense of humor, and empathetic nature. Gerry started his The Golden Bachelor season 1 journey with 22 women vying for his heart, and narrowed it down to three women for the hometown dates: Theresa, Leslie Fhima, and Faith Martin. He sent Faith home and went on the overnight Fantasy Suite dates in Costa Rica with Theresa and Leslie.
Gerry and Leslie's chemistry was undeniable leading up to the final date, and they only showcased their love for each other more after having spent the night together. Gerry said things that made Leslie feel like she was going to be his choice. Going into his date with Theresa, Gerry had trouble being present and still felt a disconnect with Theresa. However, Theresa opened up more during their final dates so much that it caused Gerry to tell Leslie that he would not be choosing her. Leslie was devasted, and Gerry went on to propose to Theresa.

Gerry & Theresa Were Incompatible
They Had Many Insurmountable Issues

Gerry and Thesa had a short engagement after The Golden Bachelor and got married on January 4, 2024. Unfortunately, the pair announced they were getting a divorce just a few months later on April 12, 2024. They cited that they were still very amicable but were parting ways because they couldn't blend their lives together. Theresa couldn't give up her life in New Jersey and Gerry couldn't give up his life in Indiana. However, there was more going on behind the scenes.
Gerry is a retiree and 70-year-old Theresa is still working as a successful woman in finance. Moreover, there were rumored tensions over Theresa wanting a prenup and Gerry being opposed to it. Also, Gerry was exposed for lying about his dating and work histories, which could have played into Theresa's impression of Gerry. Gerry and Theresa's deep-rooted incompatibility goes to show that there was no foundation for their matching, which negatively affects how The Golden Bachelor is perceived by viewers.
The Golden Bachelor Cast & Connections Were Authentic
Gerry Fell In Love During The Golden Bachelor Process
While Gerry and Theresa may not have been compatible, they did form an authentic connection (via Bachelor Nation.) In fact, Gerry formed meaningful and genuine connections with many of The Golden Bachelor women. The problem with the show's credibility doesn't lay with its authenticity among Gerry and the rest of the cast, it comes down to Gerry not picking the right person, and taking things too far by marrying the wrong person. No fans wanted to see Gerry and Theresa end in divorce, so their split alone puts the credibility of the process into question.
Were Gerry to have held off on marrying Theresa and explore their connection more, their relationship may have seemed more relatable, but their fast-paced road to marriage and then subsequent divorce devalued their The Golden Bachelor connection.
Because of how captivating Gerry's romances with many of The Golden Bachelor women, the show was compelling. While Gerry and Theresa may not have worked out, the show stayed true to presenting senior dating hopefuls' circumstances and feelings.

Every Nachelor Nation lead and group of participants is different, so fans can't base the failure of one couple of the future success of others. There has only been one season of The Golden Bachelor, so it is still a very new show even though its part of a long-established franchise. With The Golden Bachelorette season 1 on the horizon for the fall, the show is poised to redeem itself from the failed connection in The Golden Bachelor season 1.
The Bachelor Franchise Has Had Successful Couples
& The Franchise Continues To Showcase True Love

While The Golden Bachelor is still a new show and needs to have more seasons in order for the show to truly establish credibility, its other Bachelor Nation shows' stats do a lot of talking toward credibility. In the 28 seasons of The Bachelor, 20 seasons of The Bachelorette, and 9 seasons of Bachelor In Paradise, there have been 27 couples who have stayed together. That is a pretty good success rate considering all the added stress and pressure falling in love on TV creates.
Since The Golden Bachelor is the newest spinoff in the franchise, it needs to grow and show fans that these senior participants can also form lasting relationships. The show may not have credibility in its ability to have an effective process toward love for the participants now after Gerry and Theresa's split. However, with more seasons of the spinoff, credibility in that sense could be gained.
The Golden Bachelorette premieres in fall 2024 on ABC.
