I Already Know What One Piece Season 2’s Saddest Episode Will Be
Summary Chopper's sad origin story will likely be a key focus in One Piece season 2.
Chopper's tragic backstory will make for One Piece season 2's saddest episode.
One Piece live-action has successfully adapted the Straw Hat pirates' origin stories so far.
One Piece season 2 may still be far away, but it is easy to predict what its saddest episode will be. After successfully adapting the first saga one of the best anime of all time, One Piece will return for season 2. The Netflix live-action anime adaptation has barely scratched the potential of its source material, as One Piece has over a thousand chapters in the manga yet to be covered. Although not much is known about season 2, the structure of the manga means that certain characters and arcs are sure to make their live-action debuts soon.
A few of the most important One Piece characters will be introduced in season 2, from new members of Luffy’s crew to some of the Grand Line’s most powerful foes. The cast of One Piece is already large and includes five protagonists, but the show’s list of main characters will only grow in season 2. Shortly before Luffy and his friends enter the Grand Line, the Straw Hat pirate crew finds a new member in Tony Tony Chopper, a Devil Fruit-eater reindeer with a beautifully tragic backstory.
One Piece Season 2’s Chopper Origin Story Will Be Its Saddest Episode
Chopper will likely get his own episode in One Piece season 2
Assuming One Piece season 2 will keep the same pacing from the first season, it is safe to say there will be at least one episode dedicated to Tony Tony Chopper’s origin story if not two. With One Piece now set to cover the Arabasta saga, the Netflix live-action series will soon introduce Chopper, one of the most beloved characters from manga and anime. Chopper is the first Straw Hat pirate to join Luffy’s crew after the East Blue saga, during which the series’ core characters are introduced.
Hiriluk and Chopper’s story takes a tragic turn and leads into one of the most emotional One Piece moments.
Chopper may not have appeared in One Piece’s first arcs, but he would become as important to the story as the “original five.” The dynamic between Chopper and the rest of the crew is one of the highlights of One Piece, yet it all starts with a very tragic story that will surely lead into season 2’s saddest episode. Chopper was once a regular reindeer, except that his nose was blue. This made him an outcast, to the point even his parents and the rest of his herd treated him like a freak.

Chopper’s life would then change forever after he ate the Human-Human Fruit, which made him into a humanoid creature with the intelligence of a human. Still, Chopper continued to be an outcast. He was now even more of a freak in the eyes of his herd and family, leaving Chopper no choice but to leave them and live on his own. Chopper would later be adopted by Doctor Hiriluk, who trained the reindeer to be a doctor and treated him like a son. Hiriluk and Chopper’s story takes a tragic turn and leads into one of the most emotional One Piece moments.
Tony Tony Chopper’s Origin Story Is One Of One Piece’s Most Emotional
Chopper’s backstory is a rollercoaster of emotions
Chopper’s childhood was sad on its own, but the final days of Hiriluk’s life make it all even more tragic. Hiriluk, who loved to be a doctor and wanted to cure all diseases but did not treat things seriously enough, was now dying. To help his only friend, Chopper tried to read a medicine book on his own to find a cure. However, not understanding the true meaning of a Jelly Roger – which Hiriluk always described as a good, positive thing – Chopper assumed that a poisonous mushroom was actually a powerful medicine.
One Piece anime is available on Netflix and Crunchyroll.
The reindeer went on a long journey to find the Amiudake mushroom and almost got himself killed in the process. Chopper even had to face his old herd to find the mushroom and bring it back to cure Hiriluk. After seeing Chopper hurt and full of bruises, Hiriluk did not dare to tell him that the mushroom was not medicine. Instead, the doctor ate it, even though it was going to kill him. Chopper eventually understood what was happening, and to make things less painful to him, Dr. Hiriluk killed himself before the poison kicked in.
Why Chopper Will Steal The Show In One Piece Season 2
Chopper has been a fan-favorite for decades

One of the best things about One Piece is how many great, colorful characters from all sorts of backgrounds exist in the world created by Eiichiro Oda. In the same universe where a stretchy boy who cannot swim wants to become King of the Pirates, a reindeer who acquired human features after eating a Devil Fruit wants to become a doctor to honor his father. Chopper is perhaps the best example of what makes One Piece such a unique story, even if compared to other beloved manga. A fun, charismatic character, Chopper can easily steal the show in season 2.
How One Piece will create a live-action Chopper remains to be seen. Bringing a character who is both a reindeer and a human, and that can transform his body depending on what the fight requires, poses a lot of challenges when it comes to visual effects. Chopper will most likely be created entirely through CGI, which is also risky even in big-budget productions. That said, the visuals in One Piece season 1 were solid, including for Devil Fruit powers like Luffy’s. Hopefully, Chopper’s design in live-action will capture all the things that make the character so special.
One Piece Already Proved It Can Nail Chopper’s Origin Story
Netflix’s One Piece properly adapted the Straw Hats’ backstories
Chopper is not the only One Piece character to have a tragic backstory. All of the Straw Hat pirates have meaningful origin stories that directly affect every choice they make during the main story, which is something season 1 of the Netflix show perfectly captured. Luffy, Zoro, Usopp, Sanji, and Nami all got flashbacks dedicated to their childhoods in One Piece season 1, and while some small changes were made, they were mostly taken straight from the manga. For example, although the Arlong Park section of the show was quite rushed, Nami’s “Help me” scene was just like in the manga.

Between Shanks’ farewell to Luffy and Nami asking for help to fight back against Arlong, One Piece included all the necessary flashbacks to establish its main characters. Those sequences were not there only for exposition, though, as they also brought a lot of emotional weight to the stories of Luffy and his friends. Should this approach be kept for season 2, One Piece will nail Chopper’s origin story. Seeing an adorable reindeer fighting to save his father’s life even though he isn’t quite sure of what he’s doing will certainly bring in a lot of tears in One Piece season 2.
