Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes Sets Up A Remake Of 53-Year-Old Sequel
Summary Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes sets up a potential sequel that may follow the plot of Escape from the Planet of the Apes.
The movie hints at space travel and a focus on co-existence between apes and humans, paving the way for a unique storyline.
Instead of an immediate Escape remake, the franchise should explore more of the current timeline before diving into time travel in the third film.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is finally here, and the newest film in the Planet of the Apes saga sets up a remake of a 53-year-old sequel. The modern Planet of the Apes movies have pulled from some weird parts of the franchise's past, with Rise of the Planet of the Apes essentially being a remake of Conquest of the Planet of the Apes. This odd sequel remake trend seems to be occurring again, however, as Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes 2 may very well be reusing one of the franchise's weirdest sequels.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes has now been released in theaters, with the film being the newest entry in the modern Planet of the Apes saga. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes takes place 300 years after War for the Planet of the Apes, continuing the continuity of the modern trilogy while focusing on all-new characters. The exciting revival movie sets up an all-new Planet of the Apes trilogy, and while it isn't known exactly where this new saga will go, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes has provided some big hints.

Kingdom's Ending Hints At An Escape From The Planet Of The Apes Remake
Which Sounds Like A Weird Choice
Close
Although it may sound weird, the ending of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes hints that the franchise may be setting up a remake of Escape from the Planet of the Apes. Escape from the Planet of the Apes is the third film in the original series, with it following a group of apes who go back in time to 1970s Earth after the planet was destroyed in Beneath the Planet of the Apes. Once there, the futuristic apes are able to interact with the humans before the destruction of the world.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes hints at space travel throughout the film, and while the characters still haven't made it to space, this seems to be the goal of future sequels. The apes only escape the planet of the apes through the use of space travel in Escape from the Planet of the Apes, meaning that if the franchise goes this route, the sequel's story is the logical next step. On top of that, one of the film's main themes is co-existence between apes and humans, something that Escape from the Planet of the Apes majorly explores.

An Escape From The Planet Of The Apes Remake Could Flip The Franchise
It Could Focus More On Humans
Close
While an Escape from the Planet of the Apes remake could be fun, it is possible that Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes' version could completely flip the franchise. In the original sequel, the apes are the ones who survive the destruction of Earth and make their way back to see modern-day humans. However, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes seems to be setting this story up to make one major change, with there being potential for the Escape from the Planet of the Apes remake to focus on humans.
The ending of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes reveals that a small clan of humans is living underground, with them using old human technology in an attempt to communicate with others across the globe. They successfully do this due to Mae's SATCOM key from the vault, setting up a path for humanity to rise again. Very little is known about these humans, but it is possible that they could determine that time travel is the only way to fix thier situation, causing them to travel back to before the Earth was taken over.
Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes' Sequel Shouldn't Be An Escape Remake
It Should Wait Until The Third Film
Close
Although it would be exciting, the next Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes movie shouldn't be an Escape from the Planet of the Apes remake. With only one film in this new era of Earth having been released, there is still a lot to be explored in this new point in the Planet of the Apes timeline. There is enough story that another movie could easily be filled, and moving away from this era so quickly would be a bad idea.

Instead, the Escape from the Planet of the Apes remake should be held off until the third movie, with it being the big finale of the new trilogy. Another movie focused on humans versus apes would be a better idea for the next Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes sequel, building up to a bigger time travel story.
