PS Plus Subscribers Will Want To Keep An Eye On May 29

PS Plus Subscribers Will Want To Keep An Eye On May 29

Summary PlayStation Plus offers subscribers of every tier three free games each month.

Following the usual announcement schedule, May 29 will be the day June's PS Plus games are revealed.

Additions to the Extra and Premium catalogs won't be announced until a couple weeks later.

In the age of gaming subscription services, PlayStation Plus continues to become a more enticing offer from Sony. The celebrated success of Xbox Game Pass likely had an influence on PS Plus adopting its Extra and Premium tiers, which provide subscribers access to a rotating, but consistently growing, catalog of games downloadable on demand. All PlayStation Plus subscribers, though – even those on the base Essential tier – will want to keep May 29 marked in their calendars.

Despite the benefits PS Plus can offer to enthusiasts, the service is unfortunately compulsory for anyone hoping to play online multiplayer games. The silver lining is that every subscription tier is entitled to three free (or rather, at no additional cost) games every month, playable as long as the subscription is active. Before Xbox Live Gold became Game Pass Core, the Games with Gold initiative offered essentially the same thing on the other side of the aisle. PlayStation Plus' monthly games have remained consistently compelling, however, unlike Games with Gold's notoriously uninteresting offers before it was discontinued.

PlayStation Plus Will Reveal Its New Monthly Games On May 29

Monthly PS Plus Games Will Be Available June 4

Barring any changes to the usual schedule, June's monthly PlayStation Plus games will be revealed on May 29, with said titles then becoming available to download six days later on June 4. Announcements typically come via PlayStation Blog on the last Wednesday of each month, with the games becoming free for PS Plus subscribers roughly a week later, the following Tuesday. Unforeseen circumstances could always change this, however.

Games added to a player's library through PS Plus will remain there, even if the subscription lapses. While a subscription is required to play PS Plus games, that subscription is not required to be contiguous in order to keep games acquired through the service.

Options are obviously much more plentiful for those with access to the Extra and Premium catalogs, including the day-one release of indie hit Animal Well, but the monthly offerings for all tiers have consistently provided subscribers with interesting and wonderful games. May alone included the critically lauded Tunic, an adventure game heavily inspired by classic The Legend of Zelda games, Ghostrunner 2, a challenging, yet addictive action platformer, and even EA Sports FC 24, the first of EA Sports' yearly sim to ship without FIFA's branding.

With any luck, May 29's monthly PS Plus games announcement will include a nice surprise along the lines of Destiny 2 expansions being additional bonuses in March and May 2024 (The Witch Queen and Lightfall respectively). The audience for free DLC is admittedly more limited than the three full games themselves, but it certainly adds some extra value to a subscription many PlayStation users likely feel is a necessity. It is, however, worth noting that Bungie is a part of PlayStation Studios, so Destiny 2 expansions joining the PS Plus lineup could be considered exceptional circumstances.

PlayStation Plus Extra & Premium Games Won't Be Revealed Until Later In June

Close

While May 29 is likely to bring exciting news for all PlayStation Plus subscribers, those keenly interested in the Extra and Premium Game Catalogs will have to wait a couple more weeks to see what's being added in June. For instance, the Extra and Premium additions for May weren't revealed until May 15, and the games themselves weren't scheduled to be added to the Catalogs until May 21. This again follows Sony's usual schedule, with roughly two-week intervals alternating between reveals for the three monthly games and the Catalog additions, with the actual availability of them offset by another week in both cases.

While the merits of each monthly PS Plus game can be debated, the service is at least consistent in offering variety, and the same follows in the Extra and Premium offerings. For example, Extra and Premium subscribers in May can play the iconic Red Dead Redemption 2, arguably the poster child for AAA gaming. In the same batch of new titles, however, were the first two Cat Quest games, a Sims 4 expansion pack, and Deceive Inc. – 2D open-world RPGs, a life sim DLC, and a multiplayer social deduction game respectively.

Regardless, May 29 will be an exciting day for all tiers of PS Plus. After Game Pass' early dominance in the gaming subscription realm, PS Plus is inching ever closer as the most direct competitor, and the consistently good monthly games provide a bonus that Xbox threw by the wayside. Despite some off months in the past, the monthly PlayStation Plus games are always something to look forward to.
