Stardew Valley Cookbook Reveals The Hidden Reason Pierre's Shop Is Closed On Wednesdays
Summary The Stardew Valley Cookbook reveals Caroline is the reason why Pierre's shop is closed on Wednesdays.
Caroline likes to have fish tacos once a week.
Players dislike Pierre due to his behavior, like taking credit for sourcing goods and being selfish.
The obvious choice for most players picking up Stardew Valley is to side against the evil JojaMart and shop local, picking up their seeds from Pierre’s General Store. The local shop is closer to the farm, offers bag upgrades – and is also closed on Wednesdays. This is probably the second most inconvenient schedule in the game (behind Marnie’s inconsistent and unpredictable hours at her shop), but it seems there is finally an answer as to why Pierre’s shop takes a mid-week break.
In the Stardew Valley Cookbook, which shares recipes for almost every recipe in the game, a little popup from Caroline shares the reason for the annoying schedule. Reddit user anothertrainreckbard shared a photo from the cookbook in which Caroline explains that her love of fish tacos is the reason for the shop being closed on Wednesdays.
“Want to know the real reason we’re closed on Wednesdays? I need my fish tacos once a week, but Pierre thinks the smell of fish would be bad for business!” her popup reads. It would seem that Wednesday has become the family's designated fish taco day.

This Has Become Another Reason Stardew Valley Players Hate Pierre
Pierre Is Easily One Of Players' Least-Favorite Townsfolk
This tidbit of Stardew Valley info poses a series of new questions: What happens to Caroline’s weekly fish tacos once the Community Center is restored? Are players ruining her favorite weekly meal by running Joja Mart out of business? Or does Pierre concede to letting the shop smell a little fishy despite his initial complaints? It's an interesting bit of Stardew lore, adding more wrinkles to what is already a complicated in-game relationship.
Of the pre-established relationships in Stardew Valley, there are few that are entirely sturdy. Mayor Lewis refuses to publicly acknowledge to the town that he’s dating Marnie, despite it being a well-known secret. Demetrius and Robin have fought in front of the player, and the new 1.6 dialogue only delves into their rift further. Pierre and Caroline are probably the rockiest of the bunch (since Abigail may not even be Pierre’s biological daughter), but players have found plenty of reasons to hate the fictional shopkeeper.
For starters, when a player sells some of their items to Pierre, he’ll claim to the local townspeople that he grew/foraged/procured the items himself, giving the farmer no credit for their hard work. Once Joja Mart goes out of business (assuming the player finishes the Community Center bundles), the other villagers will complain about his shop's prices increasing, now that his store is the only one in town.
Pierre also interrupts the farmer’s six-heart event with Abigail, insisting that she has to leave the graveyard to help Caroline cook dinner (a move many players consider sexist). Add to this him consistently missing Caroline’s birthday and time with his family during holidays and festivals to work, and it’s no wonder players aren’t surprised at Caroline’s alleged infidelity. There’s even an entire subreddit dedicated to hating on Pierre. Though he’s not the most-hated NPC in Stardew Valley, he is consistently one of players’ least favorites.
