The 1 Original Mad Max Box Office Record Furiosa Can't Possibly Beat

The 1 Original Mad Max Box Office Record Furiosa Can't Possibly Beat

Summary Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga won't beat the original's profit record due to its high budget.

The original 1979 Mad Max was incredibly profitable with a low budget.

Furiosa may become the franchise's biggest movie, but it can't surpass the original's success.

Even if Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga does extraordinarily well, the Mad Max spinoff can’t possibly hope to dethrone one impressive franchise box office record. The Mad Max series has come a long way from its humble beginnings. 1979’s original Mad Max was made for only $350,000, a meager budget that shaped the movie’s entire story. The original Mad Max was only set in the future to save on production costs, as filming in abandoned locations was cheaper and could be excused with vague nods to the movie’s futuristic setting. The franchise has changed a lot since.

The first spinoff of the series, the upcoming Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, cost a whopping $168 million and is expected to be one of the biggest blockbusters of summer 2024. Its predecessor, 2015’s Fury Road, earned over $380 million at the box office and some of the franchise’s best reviews yet. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga’s place in the Mad Max series timeline means its story will flash back to the franchise’s origins, but the movie can’t unseat the 1979 original when it comes to an impressive box office record. Even Mad Max 5: The Wasteland won’t be able to achieve this feat.

Furiosa Can’t Defeat Mad Max’s Incredible Profit

The Original Low-Budget 1979 Movie Was Historically Profitable

Close

It might be the biggest movie in the series, but Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga can’t beat the original movie’s profit-to-cost ratio. Mad Max cost around $350,000 ($1.966 million in 2023) and made over $100 million. To match this, Furiosa: A Mad Sax Saga would need to make 285 times its $168 million budget, which would put that value at over $40 billion. Since the most financially successful movie in history has earned less than $3 billion apiece, it is fair to say that this could never happen. Even when adjusted for inflation, such a feat would be completely unimaginable.

With a lifetime gross of almost $3 billion, Avatar is the most financially successful movie of all time. When inflation is taken into account, Gone With The Wind’s $4 billion beats James Cameron’s blockbuster. Neither of these comes close to the huge sum Furiosa: A Mad Sax Saga would need to make for the movie to beat Mad Max’s historic box office achievement. This analysis doesn’t even touch on the fact that Furiosa: A Mad Sax Saga is a violent, R-rated action movie whereas Gone With The Wind and Avatar were both much better suited to family viewing.

Furiosa Could Beat Another Mad Max Box Office Record

The Spinoff Might Become The Franchise’s Biggest Movie

Without adjusting for inflation, Furiosa: A Mad Sax Saga would need to make around $381 million to dethrone Fury Road, which is currently the franchise’s biggest release. This is still a pretty big ask, but it is a much more believable goal for the spinoff. Furiosa: A Mad Sax Saga might make more than Mad Max: Fury Road as the spinoff faces less competition at the box office and benefits from Furiosa’s established popularity. However, even if Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga does beat its predecessor at the box office, the spinoff will never outdo the original Mad Max’s astounding performance.
