New Starfield footage has confirmed a massive rumor about its first DLC, Shattered Space. The DLC was announced before Starfield's launch as an additional incentive for players to purchase the game's Deluxe or Constellation Editions to receive immediate access to the content upon its release, and recently, Bethesda's Todd Howard confirmed that it would be launching in Fall 2024, almost a year after the main game did.

An official update from Bethesda Softworks walked players through its May update, which introduces long-requested features like additional ship customization and city maps. It also showed a first glimpse at future patches that will introduce land vehicles, more quests, and Shattered Space.

At first, the footage of a development window showed a purple-tinted planet with two large spires being moved, and eagle-eyed Redditors such as Bradyla123 noticed the asset information that appeared on-screen briefly all mentioned House Va'ruun, confirming the long-running speculation that the sequel will focus on the mysterious group.

House Va'ruun is the third interstellar government to have formed in the Settled Systems, but despite various conversations about the house and other lore found across the galaxy-spanning map, their base of operations was never shown in the game. House Va'ruun is situated in the capital city, Dazra on the planet Va’ruun’kai, but its star system is unknown, with the group going to great lengths to keep it a secret by refusing to give its own agents the jump coordinates and instead dropping them off at random locations to carry out their missions with practically no support. These agents also can't return home until their superiors deem their mission complete and send a ship to retrieve them, further ensuring they don't know the route.

Romanceable companion Andreja was a member of House Va'ruun before joining Constellation as an astronomer and navigator, and plenty of lore can be uncovered through conversations with her.

Bethesda has confirmed Shattered Space will bring new locations, and so many immediately figured Va'ruun'kai and its hidden star system would be the obvious choice as it would also be in keeping with the pre-established lore, rather than just introducing another random collection of planets. While no story details have been confirmed yet, the brief glimpse in Bethesda's video has confirmed that House Va'ruun will be playing a part in Shattered Space's story, and the purple planet is most likely Va'ruun'kai as it doesn't match others seen in the game so far, and is filled with named Va'ruun structures.

While Shattered Space is still many months away, the idea of exploring all new planets and delving deeper into one of Starfield's main governments' worlds is a promising one for players. Hopefully, with a confirmed Fall 2024 release window, Bethesda will begin to share more information surrounding the expansion's storyline and what new threats players will face.
