Elden Ring Director Shares A Disappointing Shadow of the Erdtree DLC Update
Summary Fans of Elden Ring will only get one expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree, as confirmed by Miyazaki - no more DLC planned.
While no future expansions are set, updates and patches may still be a possibility post-Erdtree release, but this is uncertain.
Although no sequel is confirmed, Miyazaki hints at the potential for a return to the Elden Ring universe in a future game.
Elden Ring fans hoping for even more expansions after the upcoming Shadow of the Erdtree DLC are out of luck as creative director Hidetaka Miyazaki shared some bad news about the game's future. Released in 2022, the community has waited for over two years to return to The Lands Between and while pre-release footage continues to look promising, some are already looking to the future. While FromSoftware is known for releasing at least a couple of expansions for their RPGs, with a few exceptions, it seems like Elden Ring won't receive any further post-launch support.
Per GamesRadar+, Miyazaki confirmed to Chinese site Campfire Camp that Shadow of the Erdtree will be the only expansion released for Elden Ring, dashing hopes that FromSoftware would further flesh out the world with additional DLC. Despite this disappointing news, the creative director doesn't mention anything in terms of updates and patches, meaning there's a chance that the developer could add some small new features after the release of Erdtree. This remains pure speculation though given that FromSoftware has yet to unveil any such development roadmap regarding the game's immediate future.

During the same interview, Miyazaki noted that while FromSoftware has no plans on further expanding Elden Ring, there's always a possibility that the studio returns to the universe in another game. While that may sound like a sequel to some, Miyazaki doesn't actually state whether this is the plan, so any talk of a follow-up game should be taken with a pinch of salt. FromSoftware has a history of producing long-running series, like Armored Core, as well as standalone titles like Bloodborne and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.
Having said that, it would make sense to one day release a sequel to Elden Ring given that it's one of FromSoftware's most successful games, proving to be a major financial and critical success for the studio. That's never been a determining factor for the team though, given that the community that's formed around the developer has long called for a sequel, or even a remaster, of Bloodborne. Rumors have swirled for years that a project of that nature is in development but nothing has yet been confirmed.
Shadow of the Erdtree is already shaping up to be an impressive expansion for Elden Ring as it will introduce players to a new area that's roughly the size of Limgrave, a sprawling area in the base game. The Tarnished's journey will continue as they're forced to encounter all manner of new monsters and smite even more terrifying bosses. The DLC is slated to arrive on June 21.
