Game Mechanics Of The Lullaby Of Life
Close
On the PC, The Lullaby of Life can be played with either a keyboard and mouse, or with a controller, with the controller being the method used most often for this review as it felt the most comfortable. The game is set up so that buttons will activate different sound pulses, and when there are more than three necessary, then additional little companions will join the main character who can be triggered by a sequence of buttons in the right order. These can get complicated, requiring a good deal of concentration to hit the right buttons at the right time, but are a fun challenge.

While the companions will follow the main character, there are times when certain triggers need to be hit to put a companion in a position where, when they are activated to play their sound, its sound waves will reach a button or other receptive point that cannot be reached by the main character. Eventually, these companions will leave, and new companions will be found throughout the journey to add challenge where appropriate, sometimes creating button sequences that can be quite long and must be pressed in the right order and at the right timing.

Not Much Story, Yet Ethereal And Thought Provoking
Both Positive And Negative In Its Philosophical Direction
The story in The Lullaby of Life is never explicitly stated in the game, with all interactions with the universe taking place through music and visual cues. There is no text or vocalized story, and cinematic moments are filled with colors and music. Ultimately, players take on the role of a small, blobby particle who has the power to play music that comes out in waves which can trigger catalysts in the world and take part in the origins of life itself. Through using music, the character can awaken dormant Elder beings, creating stars and life in the galaxy.

Despite nothing being said, the beautiful puzzles and peaceful atmosphere can trigger one's brain to start looking at things in new ways. Whether trying to find a creative solution to a unique puzzle, or simply pondering the creation of a star while gliding through colorful environments, The Lullaby of Life excels at creating a philosophical feeling, although this can be for both good and bad at times.
Some levels of the game can become suddenly dark, with the main character chased by evil dark forces in space. Due to the peaceful nature and meditative tranquility, a person can be lulled into a thought-provoking mindset and then cast into what can only be described as visual depression. The main selling point of The Lullaby of Life is the beauty of the game. Its colors, soundtrack, and psychedelic patterns are stimulating and engaging, and draws players in to want more of the experience. Its puzzles are not to be under-valued, however, demanding attention in their own right. The creativity of mechanics in the game provide unique forms of puzzles that are not seen in many titles, and are perfectly crafted to guide one further into the game as the challenge increases.
Whether using timing or placement to make a sound wave trigger a reaction at just the right time, or utilizing the environment to cast sound waves into off-screen areas through the use of lines and cords, each puzzle offers new ways of looking at music and sound, while constantly evolving. Puzzles never become overused, with frequently changing mechanics offering constant stimulation.
