The Pope's Exorcist 2 Officially Confirmed In New Producer Update

Summary The Pope's Exorcist 2 was previously confirmed to be in development, but the sequel now officially has the green light to move forward, a producer reveals.

The first film, which stars Russell Crowe as exorcist Gabriel Amorth, was a hit at the box office and on streaming in 2023.

With the possibility for The Pope's Exorcist 3 and a separate exorcism-themed movie due out this summer, Crowe could become a major figure in this horror subgenre.

The Pope's Exorcist 2 is now officially confirmed, a producer reveals in a new update. Released in 2023, The Pope's Exorcist stars Russell Crowe as Father Gabriel Amorth, one of the top exorcists at the Vatican who uncovers a dark conspiracy while attempting to save a possessed child. The movie, which was directed by Julius Avery, earned somewhat mixed reviews from critics, but was a hit with audiences, and it was revealed earlier this year that a sequel was in early development.

Producer Jeff Katz now reveals that The Pope's Exorcist 2 is officially confirmed to have the green light for production. While it's not clear when the movie will actually start filming or when it could potentially release, the producer is evidently excited about the news. Check out Katz' tweet below:

"Amorth Nation," Katz writes, "I just got the call. IT'S OFFICIALLY HAPPENING!!!" Katz concludes his tweet with a declaration of gratitude to those who were vocal about their love of the first film, writing, "Thank you to the amazing [The Pope's Exorcist] fans. You made this happen. Gas up your Lambretta – and get ready to ride."

The Pope's Exorcist Was A Hit For Russell Crowe

Crowe Could Become An Exorcism Subgenre Draw

Made on an estimated budget of $18 million, the Crowe horror flick ended up maxing out at just under $77 million worldwide at the box office. This makes the film a clear box office success, despite The Pope's Exorcist's more middling reviews. In addition to this box office performance, however, The Pope's Exorcist was also a hit on streaming months after it concluded its theatrical run, which was likely a major factor in getting a sequel off the ground.

After hitting theaters in April 2023, The Pope's Exorcist topped the Netflix top 10 chart in August. Clearly, the horror flick has struck a chord with audiences, and Crowe may actually have found himself a new genre niche for himself. In addition to The Pope's Exorcist 2, Crowe teased earlier this year that it's possible The Pope's Exorcist 3 could eventually be on the way as well. The actor pointed out that Amorth wrote 12 books, after all, meaning they have no shortage of source material to draw from.

In addition to The Pope's Exorcist franchise, Crowe is also set to appear in The Exorcism, due out this summer. This film, which is directed by Joshua John Miller, sees Crowe starring as an actor who begins to unravel while shooting a supernatural horror film. It remains to be seen whether The Pope's Exorcist 2 will end up getting a sequel, but, if it does, Crowe could star in as many as four exorcism-themed films in a matter of years, cementing his position in this popular horror subgenre.
