Sinestro Meets His Possible Son in the Most Unexpected Place
In Sinister Sons #4 with Peter J. Tomasi, Vasco Georgiev, Tamra Bonvillain, and Rob Leigh, Sinestro returns to New Korugar and discovers that the Sinestro Corps Central Power Battery has been destroyed. Sinestro, now imbued with the Red Lantern powers, angrily demands to know who is responsible. Unable to find an answer, Sinestro prepares to seek out the perpetrator himself, only to stay after his people beg him to lead them. Sinestro agrees to lead and promises that he will make New Korugar’s enemies pay.
Sinson opens up to Lor-Zod and reveals he believes that Sinestro is his father...
Meanwhile, Lor-Zod, Sinson, and their new companion Major Tom are still in the belly of the space whale Melville, who’s currently being attacked by a band of space pirates. The only way for them to escape is for Melville to hyper-jump to safety, but unfortunately, the whale is in too much pain to focus. The team decides to rewire Melville’s pain receptors so it will focus on fleeing, so Lor-Zod and Sinson head straight to where Melville’s brain is located.
While Major Tom deals with several invading pirates, Sinson makes contact with Melville’s brain. Lost in a trance, Sinson utters the words ‘Sinestro’ and ‘Korugar’ while Melville makes the hyper-jump needed to get away from the space pirates. The boys realize that Melville has transported them all to New Korugar after reading Sinson’s mind. Sinson opens up to Lor-Zod and reveals he believes that Sinestro is his father just as Sinestro, now decked out in a Red Lantern uniform, appears inside the whale, asking the trio what they’re doing near New Korugar.
Who is Sinson and Where Has Sinestro Been?
Close
Korg is a Korugarian orphan who once lived on the planet Xela, under the care of a cruel caretaker named Nagaf. Life with Nagaf was hell for Korg, who was forced to steal things to pay for the privilege of Nagaf’s ‘care’. The only thing that kept Korg sane was the belief he held in his heart; the idea that he was Thaal Sinestro’s son. Korg looked up to Sinestro and emulated him as much as possible, even drawing a mustache on his face to look like his idol.
Korg is introduced in the story "Wayward Son", told in Green Lantern #4-7 (2024)!
Though Nagaf always trampled on Korg’s belief, the boy’s faith in Sinestro never wavered. In secret, Korg built a ship to leave Nagaf behind and head to New Korugar to look for Sinestro. Unfortunately, Nagaf destroyed the vessel, crushing Korg’s hopes. However, the boy rebelled and inspired his fellow orphans to dispatch Nagaf. The movement was successful, and Korg, taking on the moniker ‘Sinson’, resolved to keep looking for Sinestro. Sinson eventually managed to steal a new vessel, leading him to meeting his new frenemy, Lor-Zod.
Elsewhere in the universe, Sinson’s role model was on Earth. With the Emotional Spectrum acting erratically, Sinestro had no way to get off-planet and return to his home. Sinestro’s plans to get off Earth were eventually foiled by Green Lantern, igniting a fury in Sinestro so powerful that it allowed him to tap into the Red Light of Rage. After a tumultuous battle with Hal Jordan, Sinestro decided to leave Earth behind and return to New Korugar for the first time in months.
What's Next for Sinestro and His Potential Son?
Right now, the question of Korg’s paternity is up in the air. There’s virtually no one who believes that Korg is Sinestro’s child and the boy has yet to make his case with any real evidence. But there’s something to be said for how much Korg truly believes he’s Sinestro’s child. Though he lacks the DNA to prove it, Korg is very much like Green Lantern's archenemy, both in his tenacity and his ability to inspire the people around him (not to mention Korg’s strong belief in the power of fear).
While Sinestro seems to be handling it far better than others, most Red Lanterns tend to give in to violent, impulsive actions.
This also wouldn’t be the first time Sinestro is revealed to have a child he didn’t raise himself. Sinestro infamously sired the former Green Lantern Soranik Natu, yet gave her up to keep her safe when Sinestro was an enemy of the Korugarian people. Of course, Sinestro has never made mention of ever having a son, but it’s not outside the realm of possibility that he similarly gave up Korg to ensure the boy wasn’t harmed by Sinestro’s numerous enemies.
For the first time in his life, Korg has the chance to prove that Sinestro is his father. Unfortunately, his chance is coming at the worst possible time. Currently, Sinestro is tuned into the Red Light of Rage rather than the Yellow Light of Fear. While Sinestro seems to be handling it far better than others, most Red Lanterns tend to give in to violent, impulsive actions. Even Sinestro temporarily lost his mind to anger when he was fighting Hal Jordan. But maybe Sinestro discovering he has a son could be the thing that helps him snap out of any rage he feels.
Can Sinson Get Through to His 'Father'?
While Sinson wants to prove his relationship to Sinestro, he’s going to need to worry more about surviving his encounter with his possible father more than anything. If Sinestro loses control to the Red Light he’s wielding, he’s liable to bring harm to Korg. But maybe hearing that Korg is possibly Sinestro’s son won’t set the Red Lantern off. Maybe it will do the opposite and help Sinestro temper his rage. Anything could happen as this family reunion kicks off, but hopefully, Green Lantern’s nemesis won’t do anything he regrets.
