Warning: Contains SPOILERS for X-Men ‘97 episode 9 Magneto stripping Wolverine of his adamantium seems to be a bit of a hot topic lately, despite it originating decades ago in the X-Men storyline "Fatal Attractions". While the reason why is obvious for any X-Men fan with a Disney+ subscription, two fans in particular have taken this iconic moment in Marvel Comics history to a whole new level by recreating it in absolutely jaw-dropping cosplay.

In an Instagram post by user Mike Washington (handle: mikedastardly87), two cosplayers are featured in an image depicting one of the cosplayers as Magneto, standing over the other cosplayer as Wolverine, in a recreation of the famous adamantium-removal scene from "Fatal Attractions". Plus, the post includes a tribute to this cosplay’s inspiration with a collage of ‘90s-era depictions of Wolverine getting his adamantium ripped from his body (including and especially the original panel itself).

Not only are the costumes absolutely outstanding - both in regard to the comic-accurate detail and the tone in capturing the scene itself - but the photo editing is phenomenal. The sky is dark and gray, the city in utter ruin around them. Magneto’s hands are glowing as he focuses his metal-manipulation powers on Wolverine’s adamantium skeleton, his face shrouded in sinister shadow. Wolverine writhes in pain on the ground as liquidized pieces of his adamantium rip through his skin - utterly helpless to the torment he’s forced to endure.

While fans have been seeing clips of it everywhere this last week, some may be wondering what exactly the story is with Magneto ripping Wolverine’s adamantium from his body. Well, it begins with Magneto threatening to wipe out all of humanity from a high-tech vessel once belonging to Cable known as Avalon, where he formed a following of like-minded mutants called the Acolytes. When humanity tried to guard the Earth from a potential global attack from Magneto, the Master of Magnetism responded with an electro-magnetic pulse that impacted the entire world.

Unable to stand for this any longer, Professor X - wearing a deadly exo-suit - assembles his most proficient X-Men to end Magneto’s villainy once and for all. And one of them was Wolverine. The X-Men made it aboard Avalon, and even did some significant damage to the ship, but it wasn’t until their final confrontation with Magneto that things really started to get serious. In fact, it was the X-Men that set the tone for what was about to transpire, as Wolverine stabbed Magneto in the gut during their fight - a level of injury Wolverine had never landed on Magneto before.

However, now understanding that the X-Men meant this fight to be to the death, Magneto stopped holding back. He reached out with his powers, grabbed hold of Wolverine’s adamantium skeleton with his mind, and ripped the metal from his body. After he was finished, Charles Xavier wipes Magneto’s mind, and inadvertently merges it with his own - but that’s a story for another time.

While fans recently got an animated adaptation of this iconic scene from the comics, there is no guarantee a live-action version will be made any time soon. The X-Men are in the early stages of making their way to the MCU - with Deadpool & Wolverine being the mutants’ first official outing in Marvel Studios’ established universe - but who knows how long it will take before "Fatal Attractions" gets adapted, if it ever does at all. Thankfully, fans don’t have to wait to see this scene brought to life, as Magneto strips Wolverine’s adamantium from his bones in this dark cosplay recreation.
