The potential relationship could have serious repercussions, reshaping the golden age of the Jedi.
"Temptation of the Force" hints at a forbidden love that may redefine the future of the High Republic era.
Star Wars could finally depict a Jedi romance between two favorite characters in the upcoming book, "Star Wars: The High Republic: Temptation of the Force." The Jedi of the High Republic era of Star Wars had quite a few problems on their plate. They had to deal with a constant and incredibly dangerous threat from Marchion Ro's Nihil, and their Stormwall and Path technologies were more than enough to keep the Jedi occupied. Other threats of the era will be revealed in the upcoming show, The Acolyte, but the Jedi also had time for other pursuits in addition to their fights.
In an excerpt from Tessa Gratton's Temptation of the Force shared by Star Wars, Avar Kriss and Elzar Mann, two Jedi Masters with a lot of history, shared an intimate moment over a box of nut bun pastries, and it hinted at their potential romance.
“I’m glad you’re helping.” Avar bit into her bun and leaned her shoulder against his. “I couldn’t let you go back across that Stormwall without a piece of me along with you.” She nearly inhaled nut bun at the dedication in his simple words.
Their conversation covered a range of topics, from Avar's recent return from the Nihil occlusion zone to Elzar's work on shielding and Sunvale devices, as well as recent events in other High Republic stories. One of the main draws of the excerpt, though, was the less-than-subtle romantic draw between Elzar and Avar. The two spoke about their futures and how their roles in the Jedi Order would intertwine, but they narrowly avoided discussing the real issue: how much they would miss each other's company. It's a hint that Star Wars could do something seldom done in canon: show a Jedi romance.

Star Wars Will At Long Last Depict A Jedi Romance
Close
Romance and love have been major parts of Star Wars for years, despite the Jedi Order's teachings on the dangers of emotional attachment. The Order forbade its members from marriage, as they viewed it as a path to the dark side, yet several Jedi had romantic relationships that usually ended in tragedy. Some notable examples include the relationships between Anakin Skywalker and Padmé Amidala and the less overt one between Obi-Wan Kenobi and Satine Kryze. One area of romance that the franchise has very little experience exploring in canon, however, is a relationship between two Jedi.
"Star Wars: The High Republic: Temptation of the Force" releases on June 11.
Now, though, that seems like it could easily change. Avar and Elzar have had romantic undercurrents in their relationship since they debuted in Light of the Jedi, and the excerpt from Temptation of the Force seems to put those attractions at the forefront of the novel. If they do amount to a real relationship, it would be the first of its kind for the High Republic era. While romance was possibly allowed in the High Republic, an attraction as deep as the one between Avar and Elzar would still have been forbidden.
Such a forbidden love being at the forefront of Temptation of the Force has some big implications for the novel. Avar and Elzar are major characters in Phase I of the High Republic, and if their potential relationship was ever discovered, it could bring with it some serious repercussions. It leaves the future of the entire era uncertain, and it could completely redefine the idea that the High Republic was a golden age for the Jedi. No matter what happens, Temptation of the Force is already shaping up to be essential Star Wars reading.
