Abbott Elementary Season 3's Odd Supporting Characters Served A Secret Purpose All Along

Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for Abbott Elementary season 3, episode 12.

Summary New characters in Abbott Elementary season 3 add depth to the show's fictional world, with varying purposes and unexpected significance.

Manny and Mr. Morton's roles finally make sense in episode 13, contributing to Gregory and Janine's love story in unique ways.

While Mr. Morton's story arc with Gregory and Janine may end, Manny and Janine's potential romance could be a focal point in Abbott Elementary's future.

While Abbott Elementary season 3’s new supporting characters didn’t serve an immediately obvious purpose, episode 13 proved that they were secretly vital to the show’s overarching story. The mockumentary Abbott Elementary’s cast of characters all play a role in fleshing out the show’s fictional world, but their purposes vary widely. Melissa is a street-smart teacher who boasts of her ties to the mob, whereas Barbara Howard is a devoutly religious educator who acts as a surrogate mother to Janine. While Abbott Elementary season 4 might expand his role, the outrageous Mr. Johnson is a classic zany comic relief character.

In Abbott Elementary season 3, the workplace sitcom introduced a handful of new characters who brought more color and variety to the series. Some of them, like Abbott Elementary’s wasted guest star Lana Condor, only appeared in a single outing. Others, like Mike O’Malley’s Captain Robinson and Keegan-Michael Key’s Superintendent Reynolds, showed up throughout the season and played major roles in Melissa and Janine’s respective subplots. However, it wasn’t until episode 13, “Smith Playground,” that the significance of two new season 3 supporting characters became clear. It turned out that Abbott Elementary had a plan for them all along.

Mr. Morton and Manny’s Abbott Elementary roles finally make sense after “Smith Playground," since Manny emerged as a romantic rival for Gregory and Mr. Morton explained his backstory. During a field trip to the titular location, Manny asked Janine out for dinner via text. This pushed Gregory to confess his feelings for her and, while the duo shared a quiet moment on the big slide, it briefly seemed like Abbott Elementary season 3’s big romance would finally pay off. Unfortunately, Mr. Morton’s cautionary tale of dating a co-worker put Gregory off the idea again and left Janine disappointed.

Earlier in season 3, Manny and Mr. Morton were funny but didn’t serve an obvious purpose in Abbott Elementary’s world. “Smith Playground” clarified their role in the sitcom, justifying two running gags in the process. Manny has been sharing his overzealous passion for education with Janine since they first met, while Mr. Morton has always been complaining about his ex-wife. “Smith Playground” proved Manny and Janine’s shared interests and Mr. Morton’s failed marriage were both relevant all along as they played into Gregory and Janine’s ongoing “Will they, won’t they" love story, albeit in different ways.

While Abbott Elementary season 3's big Janine change introduced Manny to the show’s cast and gave Mr. Morton a bigger role, it is tough to see where the two characters will go next. Mr. Morton can still appear as a supporting character, but his usefulness in Gregory and Janine’s story has come to an end. Thus, the running gag of his miserable home life will likely be phased out. In contrast, Manny and Janine may start dating now that Gregory has decided against asking her out, or Abbott Elementary's season 3 finale could see both her potential paramours simultaneously try to woo her.
