Elden Ring is back as FromSoftware debuts a stunning new trailer that shines the spotlight on Shadow of the Erdtree's story, giving players a taste of what to expect. The footage show is, in keeping with the genre's trappings, fairly cryptic but those versed in the game's deep lore will undoubtedly recognize some familiar faces as The Tarnished is sent to complete yet another dangerous quest in the Land of Shadow. Of course, the trailer also includes plenty of monstrous enemies and terrifying boss encounters to keep the community speculating.

Per the official Story Trailer on YouTube, the footage largely focuses on the war that unfolded in the Land of Shadow as the terrible leader known as Messmer unleashes his army of flame upon those who dwell under the Erdtree.

Miquella, a background character in Elden Ring, also takes the spotlight as the trailer highlights how the Empyrean loses his Golden Lineage seemingly in an effort to stop Messmer's barbaric onslaught. The trailer concludes with a group of heroes paying their respects to Miquella, implying that the seek vengeance.

Devoted Elden Ring fans will undoubtedly recognize several familiar faces in the most recent trailer but the stars are undoubtedly Miquella and Messmer, who seem to be poised as the protagonist and antagonist of the DLC. The former is Malenia's brother and it's stated in previously released footage that he will guide The Tarnished to The Land of Shadow as he awaits a promised lord. As for Messmer the Impaler, next to nothing is known about the firey villain but it seems safe to assume he'll be a key boss fight in Shadow of the Erdtree.

FromSoftware may have unveiled a decent chunk of Shadow of the Erdtree's story but there are still plenty of unknown factors at play. The studio has confirmed that the expansion will be massive in terms of its scale, ambition, and install size, noting that while the base game is roughly 50GB in size, the DLC is 60GB by itself. That may not be the most accurate means to calculate the length or depth of a game but it certainly leads one to believe that the monolithic expansion could take at least a few dozen hours to complete.

Elden Ring fans should start preparing for the release of Shadow of the Erdtree given that the long-awaited expansion is currently slated to debut on June 21. Newcomers are running out of time to complete the base game given that, depending on skill level, it can easily take 100 hours to wrap up every quest and slay all the bosses across the entirety of The Lands Between. Whether or not the expansion manages to reach the heights of the original game remains to be seen but FromSoftware has a reputation for delivering some of the best DLC in the business.
