All American showrunner Nkechi Okoro Carroll explains the inspiration behind Billy Baker's (Taye Digg) return in season 6. The hit CW sports drama follows the story of Spencer James (Daniel Ezra), a Los Angeles high school student invited by coach Billy Baker to play football at Beverly Hills High. The pair's relationship was a central component of the series, until Billy's tragic death midway through All American season 5. However, it was recently confirmed that the character Billy would be back in a guest appearance in season 6.
In an interview with Variety, Carroll talked about how they decided to bring Billy back during All American season 6 and how this will be managed, despite his death. The showrunner shared how she and the crew reflected on losing their fathers early in life, where some felt they still talked to their dads or even found letters. This inspired Carroll to create the Billy storyline that honored the experience of anyone who had to say goodbye to their father. Check out Carroll's comments below:
When we all used to talk about our personal experiences, all of us sort of had the same moment of ‘I still talk to my dad,’ or ‘I found a letter of my dad’s and it triggered this conversation.' There was always something. It was never just over for any of us when our fathers passed, and so we really wanted to honor the truth of that moment. I knew I wanted to do something where the important people in Billy’s life were having a conversation with him without realizing they were having a conversation with him. And then doing something distinct for Laura, because she talks to Billy every day anyway. She doesn’t need a journal. She doesn’t need a letter, because he’s always with her. That’s sort of what that final moment represented. He’s still there co-parenting the kids, to get them through these tough moments.”

While All American's decision to kill off Billy most likely came because Diggs wanted to leave, the ending also felt right for the character to end his journey on the show, as it was planned since season 4.
In season 6, episode 8, "Kids See Ghosts," Billy's return comes when his kids, Olivia (Samantha Logan) and Jordan (Michael Evans Behling), are given letters he wrote to them, while Spencer, who viewed Billy as a father figure, is given his journal. The trio read his words, which help them to understand themselves and their situations better. Diggs also appears in multiple scenes, re-enacting what Billy had written. This scene is emotionally resonating, which makes far more sense given Carroll's insight into the inspiration behind the story.
Related Did All American's Billy Baker Die In Real Life? Billy Baker shockingly died in All American season 5, but since the series is based on a true story, did the person who Billy was based on die, too?
Billy's return is important since many characters struggle with their personal lives in season 6. Olivia struggles to finish her book about her father, Jordan wrestles with his NFL future, and widow Lauren (Monét Mazur) is considering dating again. Billy's words profoundly affect all three and help them find their way, allowing him to continue a parental role from beyond the grave. While All American's decision to kill off Billy most likely came because Diggs wanted to leave, the ending also felt right for the character to end his journey on the show, as it was planned since season 4.
As All American still awaits its season 7 fate, the characters face complex futures without Billy's guidance, but they will have to make their own mistakes and learn their own lessons. The departure of a mentor figure is often a crucial theme in storytelling that allows the protagonists to become the best and most complete versions of themselves. Though it is a sad moment for the show, All American season 6 handles Billy's death and return in a touching and enriching moment that never feels forced, and feeds into the rest of the show organically.
