The Parent Trap 2 Is Facing 2 Unavoidable Problems (But It Could Still Work)

Summary The Parent Trap 2 would miss the point of the first movie by having Annie and Hallie, now adults, try to fool their parents again.

The challenge of bringing back Elaine Hendrix's character, Meredith Blake, presents a significant obstacle to The Parent Trap 2.

A potential twist in The Parent Trap 2 could involve Annie and Hallie swapping places again, this time with their own families, but would require a believable and engaging story.

The Parent Trap 2 seems likely now thanks to Lindsay Lohan’s return and the ongoing legacy sequels trend, but it’s facing two unavoidable problems. Lindsay Lohan rose to fame in 1998 when she starred in Disney’s The Parent Trap as twins Annie and Hallie. Directed by Nancy Meyers, The Parent Trap is a remake of the 1961 movie of the same name and an adaptation of the 1949 novel Lisa and Lottie, by Charles Shyer. The Parent Trap was a critical and commercial success, launching Lohan’s career and turning her into one of Disney’s most promising young actresses.

The Parent Trap follows Annie and Hallie, twins who were separated shortly after their birth as their parents divorced: Annie was raised by her mother, and Hallie by her father. After casually meeting at summer camp and learning the truth about their family, they decide to swap places to get their parents back together, but they weren’t counting on their father being about to marry a young woman named Meredith Blake (Elaine Hendrix). Although a sequel to The Parent Trap never happened, talks about it have resurfaced, and while a sequel faces two huge problems, it could still work with a twist.

The Parent Trap 2 Would Miss The Point Of The Movie

The Title Trick Can’t Be Replicated Now

The charm of The Parent Trap is the whole, elaborate plan that Annie and Hallie come up with to reunite their parents. It’s not just changing places but learning to be the other in just a couple of weeks before summer camp is over, and it’s a very entertaining process to watch. The expectation of whether or not Elizabeth (Natasha Richardson) and Nick (Dennis Quaid) would notice their daughter wasn’t the one they raised kept The Parent Trap interesting and exciting, and the quick thinking and unbelievable plans Annie and Hallie came up with were very unique to their age.

Adults Annie and Hallie trying to fool their parents again wouldn’t be believable, and there’s another obstacle there as Natasha Richardson passed away in 2009.

As mentioned above, a sequel to The Parent Trap never happened, but the recent legacy sequels trend has sparked conversation about a possible continuation. Speaking to ExtraTV in May 2024, Lisa Ann Walter, who played Hallie’s nanny Chessy, revealed she had talked to Lindsay Lohan’s publicist about The Parent Trap 2, as Lohan is now doing Freaky Friday 2 and there’s a possibility that The Parent Trap 2 could happen now. However, The Parent Trap 2 would completely miss the point of the first movie and the title of both, as Annie and Hallie are now adults.

Adults Annie and Hallie trying to fool their parents again wouldn’t be believable, and there’s another obstacle there as Natasha Richardson passed away in 2009. Pulling off another plan to fool their parents wouldn’t be believable as they have all gone through that already, and it would be strange to see Annie and Hallie as adults trying to do something like that again, thus completely missing the point of the movie.

The Parent Trap 2 Needs Meredith Blake But Can't Bring Her Back

Meredith Blake Was Key In The Parent Trap

Walter said that not only is Hendrix her best friend but also “‘Mean Meredith’ needs to have redemption”, which isn’t exactly true.

Walter not only mentioned that Chessy would have a role in The Parent Trap 2, but she also wants to bring Elaine Hendrix back. Walter said that not only is Hendrix her best friend but also “‘Mean Meredith’ needs to have redemption”, which isn’t exactly true. Hendrix’s Meredith Blake was a 26-year-old publicist from San Francisco who had been working with Nick to supposedly help his business as he was a vineyard owner – however, what Blake truly wanted was to marry Nick for his money, and once married, she would send Hallie to boarding school.

Meredith Blake was an entertaining villain to watch as Annie and Hallie pulled some great pranks on her, but she was also a bad person who would be hard to redeem.

Of course, what Meredith wasn’t counting on was Hallie having a twin and them coming up with a plan to get their parents back together, adding more chaos to her life. Meredith Blake was an entertaining villain to watch as Annie and Hallie pulled some great pranks on her, but she was also a bad person who would be hard to redeem.

Meredith Blake can’t really return in The Parent Trap 2 as either a redeemed character (as it wouldn’t be believable nor would it be fun) or as a villain, as everyone now knows what her real intentions had always been – and yet, a sequel would be weird without her after her unforgettable role in the first movie, proving that The Parent Trap 2’s biggest enemy is all the time that has passed since the first movie came out.

The Parent Trap 2 Can Give The Title A Fun Twist To Make It Work

A Twist To The Title Could Give Annie & Hallie A New Story

Annie and Hallie could swap places once more, this time so they could be with the other’s family.

Annie and Hallie wouldn’t be able to fool their parents again in The Parent Trap 2 nor would they have to deal with Meredith Blake again, but the movie could give its title and premise a twist. Annie and Hallie could have their own families now, giving The Parent Trap 2 a chance to have them swap places once more, this time so they can be with the other’s family.

Of course, the challenge with this twist is coming up with a believable and engaging story for Annie and Hallie to do the swap again now as parents. The Parent Trap 2’s biggest challenges are a result of all the time that has passed since the release of the first movie, and if the sequel moves forward, it would be a huge risk.
