The Strangers 2 Already Has A Massive Problem After Chapter 1's Cliffhanger Ending
Warning! The following article contains SPOILERS for The Strangers: Chapter 1.
Summary Maya is the surviving heroine in The Strangers: Chapter 1, making her the focal point of the upcoming sequels in the trilogy.
Killing Maya off in Chapter 2 would dampen suspense and disappoint viewers invested in her story.
The Strangers franchise hinges on Maya's survival; focusing on the villains would be too bleak for continuing sequels.
Although The Strangers: Chapter 1’s cliffhanger ending is creepy, the final twist does effectively give away the next movie’s ending. The Strangers: Chapter 1’s cast of characters is surprisingly small, with most of the movie focusing on Madelaine Petsch’s Maya and Froy Gutierrez’s Ryan evading the trio of titular masked killers. There are a few shady townspeople who appear early on and an unfortunate Airbnb owner who puts in a brief appearance but, for the most part, the movie centers only on this small quintet of characters. As such, any fatalities are pretty pivotal.
Ryan doesn’t survive the events of the movie, but The Strangers: Chapter 1’s ending reveals that Maya is alive and recuperating in the hospital. The Strangers: Chapter 1’s mid-credits scene confirms that the eponymous killers are still after her, while the movie’s ominous “To be continued…” proves that Maya is far from safe. Despite how grim Maya’s future seems, The Strangers: Chapter 2 will have a hard time making her plight suspenseful after this ending. By announcing a trilogy of new movies, the creators of The Strangers: Chapter 1 gave away The Strangers: Chapter 2’s ending.

The Strangers: Chapter 2 Can’t Kill Off Maya
Madelaine Petsch’s Final Girl Is The Trilogy’s Heroine
Close
For the new Strangers reboot trilogy to succeed, the series needs to offer viewers a compelling protagonist to follow.
Since she doesn’t die in The Strangers: Chapter 1, viewers know that Maya will almost certainly survive The Strangers: Chapter 2. Other than the killers, Maya is the lone link between the trilogy's debut and its sequel, and she is the only heroic character who can carry the story of the trilogy through to The Strangers: Chapter 3. For the new Strangers reboot trilogy to succeed, the series needs to offer viewers a compelling protagonist to follow. Maya fills this role in The Strangers: Chapter 1, meaning she now can’t be killed off in The Strangers: Chapter 2.
Maya is a strong protagonist and her continuing story could see her finally unmask the mysterious "Strangers" and get to the bottom of their backstory. However, all of this potential doesn’t change the fact that viewers won’t need to worry about her safety. Since she doesn't die in Chapter 1, Maya’s almost certain to survive until the end of the trilogy. Killing off Maya midway through The Strangers reboot story would be subversive, but this would also be sloppy storytelling. Wasting a well-established heroine would run the risk of feeling like unnecessary shock value for its own sake.
Why The Strangers: Chapter 3 Needs Maya
Focusing On The Villains Would Be Too Bleak
The fact that there is a third movie set to release means Maya is pretty much guaranteed to remain the lead protagonist throughout The Strangers trilogy. If, in a shocking twist, Chapter 2 does kill off Maya, there would be no motivation for viewers to return and see the villains continue killing without repercussions. Although they might be the characters who viewers are most interested in, the Strangers aren’t the protagonists of The Strangers movies. The Strangers trilogy promises to develop the villains, but Maya is the main character. As such, the next sequel can’t get away with killing her after The Strangers: Chapter 1.
