Godzilla's Titans Battle Norse Warriors, Ancient Egypt & Feudal Japan in Mind-Blowing Art

Summary Godzilla is seemingly leading his Titans to destroy humanity throughout history in new mind-blowing artwork for the upcoming miniseries Godzilla: Here There Be Dragons II - Sons of Giants.

While it looks bad, perhaps Godzilla is trying to save humanity from an aspect of itself, specifically, the monster-worshiping cult called the Sons of Giants.

Fans don't yet know why Godzilla and his Titans are causing so much destruction, only that the artwork depicting it is absolutely beautiful.

Godzilla is usually depicted as the savior of humanity, the one who will curb the destruction caused by other Titans to ensure a planetary balance of power, as he is quite literally the King of the Monsters. However, one storyline paints Godzilla in a much different light, not as humanity’s savior, but its adversary all throughout history - and he isn’t alone. Godzilla’s Titans battle Norse warriors, lay waste to Ancient Egypt, and utterly decimate feudal Japan in an all-new miniseries, and all of it is depicted beautifully in mind-blowing cover art.

In a preview shared by AIPT Comics for IDW Publishing’s Godzilla: Here There Be Dragons II - Sons of Giants by Frank Tieri and Inaki Miranda, fans are given a first-look at the upcoming miniseries. Not only does this preview contain the official description, but also five absolutely brilliant pieces of artwork that will be featured as the series’ cover art, all done by artist Gavin Smith.

A sequel to last summer's smash miniseries! Frank Tieri and Inaki Miranda reunite to explore the conspiracy that led to Sir Francis Drake hiding his treasure on Monster Island! Who are the Sons of Giants, and what is their mission? More importantly, what is their connection to Godzilla and the other monsters? This series shows us how it all came to be, how Godzilla was discovered by the leaders of the world, and how it changed history forever!

Each piece of artwork depicts a unique monster wreaking havoc in different parts of the world, at different points in history. Godzilla himself is decimating feudal Japan while Cthulhu (or, at least, a monster that looks like Cthulhu) is terrorizing Viking ships as they cross treacherous waters. Mothra is destroying entire pyramids in Ancient Egypt, while Rodan is setting the Mesoamerican pyramids ablaze, and King Ghidorah destroys a Roman coliseum.

Godzilla is Leading a Charge Against Humanity in New Miniseries

The official solicitation makes it clear that Godzilla is still very much considered the King of the Monsters, even in this alternate continuity from the more widely-known MonsterVerse (where he proved himself as such after defeating King Ghidorah in Godzilla: King of the Monsters). That means no Titan (including King Ghidorah, apparently) will operate in such a destructive capacity unless Godzilla allowed them to, which seems to be the reason behind the chaos depicted in these pieces of artwork.

This leads fans to question why Godzilla would ‘okay’ a series of devastating attacks on humanity, and even get involved in said attacks himself. While there’s always the possibility that this version of Godzilla is more akin to the original (or the one featured most recently in Godzilla: Minus One), that being more of a monstrous villain than a planetary savior, there seems to be something else at work here. Perhaps Godzilla isn’t necessarily trying to destroy all of humanity, but rather a small fraction of it that angles to control the masses - a small fraction that Godzilla himself inadvertently created: the Sons of Giants.

While it may have seemed like ‘Sons of Giants’ in this series’ title was a reference to all the monsters Godzilla has dominion over, that’s not the case, and it could answer why Godzilla and the other Titans are attacking humanity in these pieces of artwork.

The Sons of Giants is a secret organization in Godzilla canon that has been active in the shadows since the dawn of human civilization. They systematically cover up any and all kaiju sightings while operating from a position of power above the rest of humanity. While Godzilla may not understand exactly why, it’s very possible that he knows the Sons of Giants is a threat to the world, which means he’s obligated to seek out every member throughout history and destroy them - or command his monsters to do the same.

As revealed in the MonsterVerse, Godzilla is connected to the Earth as if the entire planet was a part of his physical body. He can feel disturbances all around the globe, and has an almost supernatural ability to pinpoint potential threats or imbalances.

While it’s possible the version of Godzilla in this story is more akin to the aforementioned ‘villainous monster’, it’s just as possible that Godzilla is exactly like his MonsterVerse counterpart, which means it’s also possible that he knows how dangerous the Sons of Giants are to humanity.

So, while he might be depicted as ‘humanity’s adversary’ on these mind-blowing covers, Godzilla may actually be proving yet again that he is humanity’s greatest protector after all.
