Rick & Morty Art Imagines A Retro Live-Action/Animated Hybrid Version That’s A Little Too Unsettling

Summary New art merges live-action with animation to create an unsettling, retro version of Rick and Morty.

A live-action/animation hybrid of the comedy might enhance surrealist humor, especially if some characters retain their cartoon looks.

A fully live-action version may not work due to the show's unique elements; a hybrid could add surrealism in a new way.

Rick and Morty art has reimagined the series as a retro live-action/animated hybrid version of itself, something that proves to be all too unsettling. The animated comedy is no stranger to making its audience feel uncomfortable. Dark jokes have formed a core part of the series since the start, with later moments such as Rick killing Rick Prime in season 7 adding more serious moments to the show. This balance will no doubt continue in Rick and Morty season 8, which promises a continued blend of dark humor and serious moments.

Now, dejaview.tv has created a wholly different unsettling experience with the piece "Morty Multiverse," turning Rick and Morty into a retro hybrid of live-action and animation using AI art.

The images reimagine the show with most characters becoming realisitic, live-action versions of themselves. However, Rick retains the exact same look as he does in the cartoon, while Morty's facial features are also exaggerated. This makes the new interpretation slightly scary, as it blends the look of the original into live-action in a surrealist way.

Rick and Morty's many adventures across time and space often feature a variety of wild events that work well in its animated format. Given the positive reception to Rick and Morty season 7, it's clear its current format as a cartoon assists in making it humorous and heartfelt for viewers. However, the show also isn't afraid to expand from its original design, having plenty of comic book tie-ins, as well as an upcoming anime reimagining. This opens the door for other renditions of the show as well, including a hybrid between animation and live-action.

A wholly live-action version of the comedy would be difficult to pull off, considering the number of alien creatures and uniquely-designed characters throughout the series. However, a blend of real actors and sets with animation could offset this, giving the show a unique style that adds a level of surrealism to the humor. As dejaview.tv's art reveals, though, the result could also end up unsettling, making the show too aesthetically uncanny to work in the blended medium.

Related 10 Things That Happen In Every Rick & Morty Episode Rick & Morty is known for its fast-paced humor and subversion of the sci-fi genre, and certain parts of the series recur many times over the episodes.

However, such a version of Rick and Morty could play into that unsettling nature, embracing a more surrealist humor to align with the new look of the show. While it would give the live-action/animated hybrid a different feeling from the original show, it could also be what makes such a show possible in the first place. Even though some elements of the show would need to change to fit its new, blended medium, there's still a chance such a wild version of the animated comedy works in reality.

Rick and Morty season 8 will air on Adult Swim in 2025. All episodes from season 1 through 7 are now streaming on Max.
