The Most Important Bad Batch Member Wasn't Even Part Of Clone Force 99

Summary Mayday's brief but impactful role in The Bad Batch shapes Crosshair's redemption journey in a profound way.

The music in the final episode hints at the important connection between Crosshair and Mayday through a blended motif.

Crosshair's path to redemption is influenced by Mayday's tragic death, leading him back to his brothers for a life of peace.

While all the members of Clone Force 99 in Star Wars: The Bad Batch are important in their own right, there's one character who's absolutely pivotal - and they aren't even a member of the titular squad. Commander Mayday is introduced in season 2, episode 13 "The Outpost," which has since become one of The Bad Batch's best episodes. His role in the story, however brief, is extremely impactful on Crosshair and his future - something that has since been confirmed by The Bad Batch's composers themselves.

Shared in an excellent series of posts, Kiner Music dives deep into the end credits song that was created for the final episode of The Bad Batch, one of which touches on Crosshair and Mayday. It's revealed that there's "a blend of the Crosshair/Mayday motif," but it's not known which is Crosshair's and which is Mayday's. This is intentional, as Crosshair "carries [Mayday] with him" - thus it only makes sense that the two are blended together in the music.

Mayday's Death Is The Key To Crosshair's Redemption

Without Mayday, Crosshair's Eyes May Not Have Been Opened

With this insight into The Bad Batch's final score, the Kiners have only further proven that it's truly Mayday's death that fully pushes Crosshair's redemption arc ahead. While Mayday's story may have only spanned one episode, the impact of his death has stayed with Crosshair all this time. In many ways, the death of Mayday was for Crosshair what the death of Tech was for the rest of Clone Force 99. Much of what Crosshair does to become better outside the Empire is because of Mayday, which is how he carries Mayday with him.

The Bad Batch Finale Honored Mayday's Death

Crosshair Getting To Live A Life Of Peace Honors His Fallen Brother

The Bad Batch's ending does Mayday justice by allowing Crosshair to live, proving that his death does somehow serve a greater purpose. Had it not been for Mayday and his tragedy, Crosshair would not have been motivated to leave the Empire, much less rejoin his brothers and earn a life of peace on Pabu. Because of what he went through with Mayday, however, Crosshair knew that he had to make a change, and that change ended up freeing him entirely from the Empire and the life of a soldier.

Had it not been for Mayday and his tragedy, Crosshair would not have been motivated to leave the Empire.

This is incredibly meaningful, and it proves how important Mayday really is. Without him, it's impossible to guess what the true fate of Clone Force 99 could have been. Crosshair needed his brothers in the Batch just as badly as they needed him, and without Mayday, it's very likely that their ending in The Bad Batch would have been much different - but now, because of his sacrifice and Tech's, they get their happy ending.
