Noah Wyle's Potential Appearance In The Librarians Spinoff Gets Update From CW Boss
Summary The Librarians: The Next Chapter may not feature Noah Wyle, despite a conversation about potentially bringing him in for one idea.
The CW executive affirms that Wyle didn't pass on any opportunity to reprise the role.
So far, Christian Kane is the only confirmed original cast member who will appear in the new spinoff.
The CW boss Brad Schwartz addresses any chance of Noah Wyle's appearance in the upcoming show The Librarians: The Next Chapter. The Librarians franchise started in 2004 with three TV movies starring Wyle as the titular character, Flynn Carsen, before the direct spinoff TV show debuted on TNT in 2014. Also starring Christian Kane, Rebecca Romijn, and Lindy Booth, the show followed a secret organization that protects the world from a magical alternate reality. More than five years after the show ended, the CW announced that spinoff show The Librarians: The Next Chapter was in development with a new main cast.
Amid reports that original star Kane will reprise his role in The Next Chapter, there was speculation that Wyle could also make an appearance. Per an update by TVLine, Schwartz revealed that there were some conversations about the possibility of approaching Wyle to give a hand-off to the new cast. However, the team decided to go in a different direction, giving the implication that the actor may not reprise his role. Check out Schwartz's full comments on the matter below:
“There were some early conversations of, ‘Do we go to [Noah Wyle] to figure out some sort of hand-off from the old to the new…?’ I forget where we ended up on all of that, but he definitely didn’t pass [on any invite]. I think we just ended up going in a different direction.”

The Librarians franchise has always focused on magic and adventure, and it seems pretty definitive that the spinoff show will continue this trend, which could help it secure ratings that are on par with the original.
Franchises switching networks and continuing successfully have happened before, with notable examples including Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Arrested Development. However, a franchise switching networks and changing its cast list is a risk that The Librarians: The Next Chapter is going to need to contend with. Kane will be returning to the franchise, but it remains to be seen if other legacy cast members might make appearances. Despite the executive's latest update, there is still a possibility that Wyle could make a cameo appearance but in a different capacity or approach.

A move to the CW is the perfect choice for the franchise, as the network has presided over a wealth of engaging fantasy shows. If the creative team can be given the license to craft the show they want, there is no reason it can't stand on its own two feet, as a strong testament to the franchise, without an over-reliance on legacy actors and rehashed storylines. The show will have the opportunity to reboot the franchise and freshen it up for modern audiences.
The Librarians franchise has always focused on magic and adventure, and it seems pretty definitive that the spinoff show will continue this trend, which could help it secure ratings that are on par with the original. It will be overseen by showrunner Dean Devlin, who worked on the original show and will bring familiarity and creativity to the show. Therefore, The Librarians: The Next Chapter could wind up being one of the top fantasy shows on the CW, even without its original cast.
Although a release date has yet to be confirmed, The Librarian: The Next Chapter will air on Thursday nights at 9 p.m. ET in the fall of 2024.
