Potential Supernatural Reboot Gets Seal Of Approval From Series Creator
Summary Eric Kripke is open to a Supernatural reboot if a fresh story in the universe surprises him.
The Winchesters' cancellation and Padalecki's schedule hint at a possible reboot.
Kripke's desire to include Padalecki in his work suggests Sam Winchester could return.
A potential Supernatural reboot gets the seal of approval from Eric Kripke. Kripke is the series creator for the hit supernatural fantasy show Supernatural, as well as the superhero series The Boys. Supernatural originally ran for 15 seasons across 2005 to 2010, and featured a leading cast including Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles, Jim Beaver, Misha Collins, Mark Sheppard, and Alexander Calvert. Supernatural also spawned the spinoff series The Winchesters, which ran for a single season on the CW.
As per an interview with Collider, Kripke speaks on the potential for a Supernatural reboot. When asked about the potential for a reboot, Kripke seemed fairly open minded. He said that he “love[s] that universe” and would be willing to return to it if “there was something out there that really surprised” him. He says he would be “all in” if someone were to find a quality story in the Supernatural universe that has not yet been told. Check out the full quote from Kripke below:
Of course, I’d want to see it. Whether I’m a part of it depends on, could I find something fresh about it that I have never seen before? Obviously, I’ve told a lot of those stories, but if there was something out there that really surprised me, I love that universe , and I’d be interested in looking at that. It’s tricky to find what story in that universe hasn’t been told, but if someone can find one, I’m all in, baby.
Why Now Is The Best Time for a Supernatural Reboot
Supernatural had over 300 episodes in the main series, so it makes sense why Kripke is skeptical as to how many more stories can be told in the universe. The franchise already tried with The Winchesters, which was canceled after only a single season on air. With their failed trial run for The Winchesters, it seems somewhat unlikely that a Supernatural reboot would be able to happen successfully.
The Winchesters is available to watch on Max.
However, a key recent piece of television news may make the likelihood of a Supernatural reboot more possible. CW recently announced that it will be canceling the hit Padalecki show Walker after four seasons. This means that the actor will now have a more open schedule, and could return for a major franchise like Supernatural with greater likelihood than he could if he were still actively working on Walker. Kripke did not specify whether the reboot would necessitate the original characters (versus a spinoff), but the Walker news opens up possibilities.
Further adding to the likelihood that a Supernatural reboot would include Padalecki is a statement Kripke made recently about The Boys. After he and Ackles expressed desire for Padalecki to appear in the Prime Video show back in 2022, Kripke recently said that there are more active offers for Padalecki to appear, saying “texts have been sent.” Kripke’s desire to include Padalecki in his creative work is a great sign that should a Supernatural reboot idea arise, Sam Winchester will be involved.
