The Witcher's First Look At New Geralt Is Good, But It's Missing The Most Important Part
Summary The first look at Liam Hemsworth in The Witcher season 4 has some good and not-so-exciting aspects.
The teaser for season 4 doesn't reveal Hemsworth's Geralt voice, a crucial part of the character.
Hemsworth faces challenges with replicating Cavill's low Geralt voice, a key aspect of the character.
Netflix has revealed the official first look at Liam Hemsworth as Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher, and while it gives a good look at Hemsworth’s physical appearance, it misses the most important part of the character. Despite viewership declining and the many complaints about the changes it has made to the source material, The Witcher is returning for a fourth season. The Witcher season 4 will set up the show’s final season and will be the first without Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia and the debut of Liam Hemsworth as the famous witcher.
Cavill’s departure was announced before season 3 was released, and the show didn’t do anything to set up the recast. The Witcher season 3 ended with Ciri (Freya Allan) powerless and rescued by the Rats, Yennefer (Anya Chalotra) creating the Lodge of Sorceresses, and Geralt teaming up with Jaskier and Milva to find Ciri. Despite having a lot to cover, all eyes are on Hemsworth’s take on Geralt and how the series will bring him in, and though the first look at the new Geralt is good, it’s not enough to ease all concerns as it missed an important part of the character.

The Witcher's Teaser Doesn't Show Liam Hemsworth’s Geralt Voice
The First Season 4 Teaser Is A Silent One
Before Netflix's reveal, photos from the set of The Witcher season 4 were leaked, giving the first look at Liam Hemsworth as Geralt. The photos don’t have the best quality and only show two of Geralt’s outfits: the one he wore during the battle against Vilgefortz in season 3 (a scene that season 4 seems to be recreating with Hemsworth) and the armor he wore in season 2. As expected, Netflix has now revealed the first official look at Hemsworth in a short teaser that shows Hemsworth’s Geralt walking with his horse through a dark forest.
The camera follows Geralt from behind and he slowly turns to it to give the first look at Hemsworth in full Geralt of Rivia makeup. This first look eased some concerns about Hemsworth’s appearance, as his makeup and hair are pretty much like Cavill’s version, so in that sense, season 4 is giving some continuity to the character. However, Netflix opted for a silent teaser (except for the sounds of the forest), so the audience is still missing the most important part of Hemsworth’s Geralt: his voice.

Liam Hemsworth's Geralt Voice Can Make Or Break His Performance In The Witcher
Geralt’s Voice In The Witcher Is A Key Part Of The Character
Cavill’s Geralt became known for his low voice, and because of this, there’s a lot of expectation around Hemsworth’s voice as Geralt.
Geralt of Rivia’s physical appearance is somewhat open to interpretation thanks to the descriptions given in the books, the video game version, and what Netflix did with the character, opting for a physically imposing Geralt with Cavill. With that in mind, Hemsworth’s version having some differences shouldn’t be a big problem (such as being less muscular), more so as season 4 is introducing storyteller Stribog telling the legend of Geralt, and his physical appearance would definitely change depending on who tells the story. However, one detail that should be kept is Geralt’s voice.
Geralt is less talkative in the show than in the books, and it was a conscious decision between showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich and Henry Cavill, with the latter revealing that the tone of his Geralt voice was an accident, but it worked. Cavill’s Geralt became known for his low voice, and because of this, there’s a lot of expectation around Hemsworth’s voice as Geralt, as it became a big part of the character’s essence in the show. However, like other aspects of Hemsworth’s Geralt portrayal, the voice will be tricky.
If Hemsworth can replicate Cavill’s Geralt voice, it will be a relief for some, but he also risks getting criticism for copying Cavill’s performance. On the other hand, if Hemsworth’s Geralt voice is different, he will face a lot of criticism for changing a key part of the character. The Witcher season 4 is facing different challenges, mostly related to Liam Hemsworth’s debut as Geralt, but there’s still a lot to see and learn about this new Geralt.
