Why I Think Star Trek: Picard's Terry Matalas Is Perfect For Marvel's Vision
Summary Terry Matalas masterfully navigates nostalgia and the future in Star Trek: Picard season 3.
Matalas' experience with android characters makes him ideal for Marvel's Vision series.
Marvel's Vision show offers hope for reuniting Wanda and Vision in a new love story.
Star Trek: Picard season 3 showrunner Terry Matalas is the perfect choice to helm Marvel's upcoming Vision television series. Star Trek: Picard season 3 was undoubtedly a resounding success. Like many, I loved seeing Admiral Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and his crew from Star Trek: The Next Generation reunite on the newly rebuilt USS Enterprise-D. Matalas created a compelling Picard season 3 story that embraced nostalgia but still looked to the future. Matalas demonstrated a clear understanding of TNG's characters as well as Star Trek's long and complex history.
Paul Bettany's Vision made his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in 2015's Avengers: Age of Ultron, after Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) uploaded the artificial intelligence known as JARVIS into a powerful synthetic body powered by the Mind Stone. Vision then fought alongside the Avengers, where he met, and eventually fell in love with, Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen), aka the Scarlet Witch. After Thanos (Josh Brolin) killed Vision in Avengers: Infinity War, the android was reactivated in 2021's WandaVision as White Vision, eventually with his original memories restored. The upcoming Disney+ Vision series will take place after these events, but the central plot of the series remains unknown.

Star Trek: Picard Shows Terry Matalas Understands Characters & Canon
Star Trek and Marvel both have long franchise histories and passionate fanbases.

With its nearly sixty-year history, Star Trek is not a franchise one enters into lightly, and Terry Matalas expertly built on that history while also looking to the future. The Marvel Cinematic Universe also has a lengthy canon of previously established characters and storylines to draw from. As someone who loves vast fictional universes with tons of connected characters, I cannot wait to see what Matalas does with Vision's story. In addition to the more obvious connections, Matalas included numerous little shout-outs to past Trek stories in Star Trek: Picard season 3, and I hope he does the same thing with Vision.
Terry Matalas even has direct experience telling the story of a resurrected android who becomes almost human. Star Trek: Picard season 3 saw the return of the beloved android Data (Brent Spiner) after his death in Star Trek: Nemesis. As Data has always been my favorite Star Trek character, his upgrade was one of my favorite parts of Picard season 3. While it would have been great to see Data continue to explore his newfound humanity, perhaps Terry Matalas could incorporate elements of that story into the Vision series. Although the new White Vision retains his memories, he still has to figure out where he fits in the new world of Marvel.

Marvel's Vision Lets Terry Matalas Do What Star Trek: Picard Couldn't
Wanda and Vision must reunite in Marvel's upcoming Vision series.

Star Trek: Picard season 3 told an action-filled story with a lot of moving parts, making it difficult to incorporate any significant romantic storylines. Although the season reunited Admiral Jean-Luc Picard with his former flame, Dr. Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden), and revealed the two had a son named Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers), Jean-Luc and Beverly didn't exactly have time to rekindle their romance. There were also hints of a budding attraction between Jack Crusher and Ensign Sidney La Forge (Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut), the daughter of Commodore Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton), but again, saving the galaxy took precedence over any potential relationship.
Terry Matalas also created Syfy's 12 Monkeys, which offers a fascinating take on time travel and includes a love story for the ages.
WandaVision beautifully depicted the tragic romance between Wanda and Vision, and the upcoming Disney+ show can reunite the two lovers. One of my biggest hopes for the upcoming Vision series is to see the android reunite with Wanda, so the two can finally get the happy ending they deserve. The Scarlet Witch may have supposedly been killed in Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, but anything is possible with the MCU, especially with the Multiverse at play. I truly loved Star Trek: Picard season 3, and I cannot wait to see what Terry Matalas does with Marvel Television's upcoming Vision series.
Star Trek: Picard is available to stream now on Paramount+.
Marvel's Vision series will stream in 2026 on Disney+.
