Star Trek: Discovery Has To End With Saru’s Wedding & I Hope They Do It Justice
WARNING: Contains SPOILERS for Star Trek: Discovery, season 5, episode 9, "Lagrange Point"
Summary Saru's wedding is a crucial focal point in Star Trek: Discovery's season 5 finale, adding a touch of romance to the high-stakes action.
The hunt for the Progenitors' technology and the threat of the Breen loom large, but Saru's wedding remains an important character arc.
While Saru and T'Rina's wedding may not get its own episode, it serves as a key element in wrapping up Discovery's optimistic journey.
Star Trek: Discovery has to end with the wedding of Ambassador Saru (Doug Jones) and President T'Rina (Tara Rosling), and I hope the show does it justice. Saru makes a long-awaited return to Starfleet Headquarters in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 9, "Lagrange Point", and Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) fills Saru in on what he missed. The USS Discovery is caught in a potentially volatile situation at the site where the Progenitors' technology has been hidden for 800 years, as Primarch Tahal intends to fill the power vacuum in the Breen hierarchy. Burnham, however, remains optimistic, anticipating Saru's wedding.
Without a shred of the fear that once defined Saru's entire character, the Kelpien Ambassador volunteers to take a shuttle out to the potential conflict in hopes of negotiating with the Breen, in the hopes that Saru is less likely to provoke the Breen's forceful retaliation. Saru is the best choice, in addition to the most logical choice, which T'Rina must concede, as they both live lives of service. As one of Star Trek: Discovery's main characters, Saru should be on the USS Discovery for Star Trek: Discovery's series finale on Thursday, May 30, but being closer to the finale's action also means being away from T'Rina, and delaying the wedding.

I hope Star Trek: Discovery will end with Saru and T'Rina's wedding. Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 9, "Lagrange Point", the penultimate episode of the series, sets up a lot of action that will no doubt pay off in Discovery season 5's finale. The hunt for the Progenitors' treasure is almost resolved, with one more puzzle before either the Federation or Breen get their hands on the Progenitors' technology. The Breen threat looms as Tahal closes in. L'ak (Elias Toufexis) is still dead. Captain Michael Burnham and Moll are missing after passing through the portal inside the Progenitors' artifact.
Saru's wedding could be the most important part of Star Trek: Discovery's ending.
Star Trek: Discovery has a lot of high-stakes story lines to wrap up before getting to Saru and T'Rina's wedding. This will be the Star Trek: Discovery series finale in addition to the Discovery season 5 finale, so it has to provide a satisfying resolution to the entire series, while finding the Progenitors' technology and dealing with the fallout with the Breen. Saru's wedding could be the most important part of Star Trek: Discovery's ending, and a great way to complete the arc of Star Trek: Discovery becoming an optimistic Star Trek series after its dark and gritty beginning.
It’s Too Bad Star Trek: Discovery Didn’t Devote A Whole Episode To Saru’s Wedding
Low-Stakes Character Stories On Star Trek: Discovery Would Have Been Great

With only one episode of Star Trek: Discovery left, there's no way to devote a whole episode to Saru's wedding to Vulcan President T'Rina, and that's unfortunate. There's not much room for breaks in Star Trek: Discovery's tightly-paced season-long arcs, so many of Discovery's characters remain unexamined and unexplored. Star Trek: Discovery just doesn't have its own version of Star Trek: The Next Generation season 4, episode 11 "Data's Day", the story of an ordinary day in the life of Lt. Commander Data (Brent Spiner) that culminates with the wedding of Miles O'Brien (Colm Meaney) and Keiko Ishikawa (Rosalind Chao). Instead, the galaxy is in danger. Again.

Ever since T'Rina proposed to Saru in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 1, "Red Directive", Saru and T'Rina's upcoming wedding has been the focus for both characters, and an event fans like myself are excited for. Scenes where Saru and T'Rina navigate the challenges and expectations of their future together form what is essentially a thoughtful, character-driven B-plot for Star Trek: Discovery season 5, and it shouldn't be dropped if Star Trek: Discovery wants to honor Saru's character evolution. This genuinely lovely romantic arc may be overshadowed by the weightier resolutions that must be in Star Trek: Discovery's final episode, but hopefully, at least some time is devoted to Saru and T'Rina's much-deserved Star Trek: Discovery wedding.
Star Trek: Discovery is streaming on Paramount+.
