Expect more minor That '70s Show character cameos in future episodes of That '90s Show, setting the stage for nostalgia without overshadowing new stars.
That '90s Show season 2 will feature a cameo from Seth Green's That '70s Show character, and this is a great opportunity for an exciting trend. The Netflix series saw several primary characters from the parent show appear, but it seems there will be less of this going into the upcoming sophomore season. It has already been confirmed that Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher will not return to That '90s Show, and many of the other stars aren't looking promising either. However, a minor That '70s Show character will join the cast of That '90s Show, and this is even better.
Seth Green's That '70s Show character, Mitch, was reoccurring throughout the series and served as a comical rival to Eric Forman. He was never a primary part of the gang, but Mitch will still be a nostalgic sight in That '90s Show, and the fact that Green is such a dearly loved actor only adds to this cameo appeal. It's currently unclear how Mitch will fit in with the plot of season 2, especially since he won't have any evident connection to the new group of basement-dwelling teenagers. However, this cameo has exciting implications for future episodes of That '90s Show.
Seth Green's Mitch Cameo Means Other Minor That '70s Show Characters Are Sure To Follow
Though the hype surrounding Green's return to the Forman residence might not be as high as if Kunis or Kutcher were to appear, Mitch's familiar face will be a welcome sight. Of course, he was just one of many minor reoccurring That '70s Show characters, and the fact that showrunners are incorporating him into the spinoff show is a good sign. It's likely that this will be an ongoing trend, and every season of That '90s Show should come with a new batch of familiar cameos. This will help set the stage for Point Place, allowing the spinoff to feel cohesive with its predecessor without getting in the way of the new stars.

Minor Character Cameos Are Better For That '90s Show Than The Primary Cast

It was great to see the majority of That '70s Show's cast cameo in season 1 of the spinoff, and it's understandable that their absence in season 2 would be disappointing. However, this is for the best. Though the presence of Kelso, Jackie, and Fez allowed the spinoff series to truly feel like a return to Point Place, these beloved characters make it difficult for audiences to become invested in Leia, Gwen, Ozzy, Jay, Nikki, and Nate. For this reason, a string of minor cameos from That '70s Show will be far more effective at creating cohesiveness without doing damage to That '90s Show's chances.
Of course, this isn't to say that leading '70s Show characters can't or won't appear in future episodes of That '90s Show. Mitch appearing in season 2 means that Eric and Donna are sure to return, and it's still possible that Fez is hanging around Point Place, too. However, it's important that after a cameo-heavy season 1, season 2 allows the new kids to shine through. Small cameo parts like Mitch can complement Leia and the rest of the gang's stories without overshining them, ensuring that That '90s Show can hold its own without depending on the wrong kind of nostalgia.
The first portion of That '90s Show season 2 will begin streaming on Netflix June 27, 2024.
Other Minor That '70s Show Characters Who Could Appear In Future That '90s Show Seasons
That '70s Show Had Dozens Of Guest Stars Who Could Cameo In That '90s Show
Close
Thankfully, minor That '70s Show characters are pretty easy to come by, since the TV show had dozens of guest stars over the years. We already got a few last season—Jim Rash's Fenton made an appearance, and it seems that Tommy Chong's Leo will continue to be a bizarre presence throughout the series. Still, this is only the tip of the iceberg. Joseph Gordon-Levitt's Buddy, who had a crush on Eric in That '70s Show, would be a welcome sight, and Eric's cousin Penny (Brittany Daniel) could also be an interesting addition.
Justin Long played a character named Andrew in That '70s Show, and as a friend of Fez, he could certainly make a reappearance in That '90s Show. Brooke Sheilds, who played Jackie's mom in the original series, could be a lot of fun in the spinoff series since she would technically be Jay's grandma. Ultimately, the list goes on and on. While it's understandable to hope for the big cameos, Green's Mitch being on the docket for That '90s Show season 2 certainly seems to imply that it's more realistic to expect more minor characters, and this still means a lot to look forward to.
