10 Moments From Will Trent Season 2 That Will Be Huge For Season 3

10 Moments From Will Trent Season 2 That Will Be Huge For Season 3

This article contains mentions of rape.

Summary Will Trent season 2 sets up a compelling story for season 3, with various traumatic events and twists.

Season 2 includes impactful moments, such as Cricket's sacrifice and Will's tragic childhood memory reveal, that will change the course of Will Trent season 3.

Relationships will evolve in season 3, like Faith committing to Luke and Ormewood navigating divorce and custody battles.

Even though Will Trent season 2 only had ten episodes to work with, the writers created a complete, intriguing story that perfectly sets up the events of season 3. The ABC crime drama is based on Karin Slaughter's Will Trent book series and centers around the eponymous GBI agent, focusing on his expert investigative skills and the trauma he endured from his past in foster care. Just when the audience thinks Ramón Rodríguez's character has hit rock bottom in the show, the writers throw in a twist that sinks him even lower (which is where season 3 will likely begin).

Will Trent season 3 is scheduled to premiere in early 2025.

Will Trent season 2 picked up where the season 1 finale left off, with Angie Polaski recovering from her back injury and Will trying to connect to his roots after learning his birth mother's identity. Over the course of the season, Will continued learning more about his origins and, unfortunately, he uncovered some trauma that he buried when he was a child. Will was put through the wringer in Will Trent season 2, and given how the finale ended, that will probably not change when ABC releases Will Trent season 3 in 2025.

10 Cricket Dying In Front Of Will

Will Trent Season 2, Episode 1

Close

The writers of the ABC crime drama series were determined not to fall prey to the sophomore slump, and the ending of the Will Trent season 2 premiere proved that they had raised the stakes and hadn't let their foot off the gas (in fact, some might argue that the second season was better than the first). Episode 1 introduced former This Is Us star Susan Kelechi Watson as Cricket Dawson, a member of the bomb squad who was brought in when a string of car bombings started plaguing Atlanta.

Although Cricket's death happened at the beginning of Will Trent season 2, her death still severely affected Will and added to his piles of trauma.

From the moment they met, it was obvious Will and Cricket had chemistry. However, they never got to pursue a relationship because Cricket died in the premiere's final moments. She and Will were trying to defuse a car bomb in the GBI parking garage. But when it became clear that they wouldn't be able to disarm it, Cricket ran off with the bomb and threw it into a closed-off room before it detonated. Cricket sacrificed herself because she knew she wouldn't be able to run away in time, and Will had to watch as the flames engulfed her.

Although Cricket's death happened at the beginning of Will Trent season 2, her death still severely affected Will and added to his piles of trauma. Watching her die will likely continue to haunt him when season 3 premieres in 2025 (along with several other unfortunate events that happened in season 2).

9 Will's Reunion With James Ulster

Will Trent Season 2, Episode 2

Close

Unfortunately, Will was forced to see James Ulster, the serial killer who murdered his birth mother, Lucy, in Will Trent season 2, episode 2. He was strictly there on business, but, of course, the two men talked about their history and whether James was Will's father or not. James claimed he was, while Will refused to believe that his father was a serial killer. Unfortunately, Will never learned the truth in season 2, leading one to assume that the mystery behind his paternity could be solved in season 3.

James was the only candidate as Will's father in Will Trent season 2, and the GBI agent's encounter with the murderer in episode 2 surely had a significant impact on him. Will seemingly doesn't want to know if James is his father. However, since Will Trent season 2 focused on Will exploring his roots, the question of whether James is his biological father or not will surely come up in future episodes.

8 Will Meeting His Uncle & Visiting Puerto Rico For The First Time

Will Trent Season 2, Episode 6 & Episode 9

Close

After learning his mother's identity (and the horrific way she died) in Will Trent season 1, Will wanted to know more about where he came from. When Will saw him in prison, James Ulster told the GBI agent that his uncle was Antonio Miranda, but Will was hesitant to reach out to him because he was afraid of rejection. Eventually, Nico's words of encouragement gave Will the courage to call his uncle, and, as it turned out, there was nothing to be scared of because Will's Uncle Antonio was ecstatic about meeting his nephew in Will Trent season 2.

Will's positive experience with his uncle might give him the push he needs to search for his biological father in Will Trent season 3.

Will and Antonio bonded over their similarities (like being dyslexic) and by Will Trent season 2, episode 6's ending, Will had introduced Antonio to his chosen family. The uncle/nephew duo formed a strong connection, and Antonio was even the one to calm down Will after he remembered the repressed memory from his childhood. Antonio then took Will to Puerto Rico in episode 9 and helped him connect to his roots. Unfortunately, Antonio moved back to the island, but perhaps he will return in season 3 (if Puerto Rico is where Will ran away to in the season 2 finale).

7 Faith Committing To Her Relationship With Luke

Will Trent Season 2, Episode 10

Close

Will Trent season 2 began with Faith Mitchell seeing (aka sleeping with) Luke, but she was hesitant to put a label on their relationship, while he wanted to make them official. Over the course of the season, Faith struggled to take the leap in her relationship with Luke, given that, as a mother, she rarely ever had time to think about herself and her needs. So, throughout Will Trent season 2's ten episodes, Faith couldn't commit to Luke, until the finale's last moments.

Faith is finally ready to be with Luke completely, and their romance will undoubtedly cross over into Will Trent season 3.

After sensing something was wrong with Will but feeling helpless to do anything about it, Faith went to Luke's place to seek comfort in Will Trent season 2, episode 10. Although the scene was short, it seemed as if something shifted in Faith and Luke's relationship. Faith is finally ready to be with Luke completely, and their romance will undoubtedly cross over into Will Trent season 3. Hopefully, Faith can finally be happy and in love (but the ABC series also loves to torture its characters, so, the odds are against Faith).

6 Will Recovering A Repressed Memory From His Childhood

Will Trent Season 2, Episode 8

Close

One of the most impactful moments from Will Trent season 2 was Will recalling his repressed memory as he frantically paced around his living room, essentially having a panic attack. Will had been seeing visions of himself as a child all season long, and he had no idea what they meant or where they came from. However, in episode 8, Will finally put the pieces together, and the truth was more devastating than anyone could have imagined.

[Will] hasn't had time to process the new trauma fully, and the GBI agent might even wonder if he has any other horrifying repressed memories.

Will formed a strong bond with one of his foster mothers, Anna, when he was a kid, but the dad, Jack, was a complete deadbeat who abused his wife. One night, Will wanted to protect Anna, so he got Jack's gun and shot him in the arm. The older man wrestled the weapon away from Will, beat him with it, and was about to shoot him when Anna stopped him. Sadly, that led to Jack shooting and killing Anna, and Will felt so much guilt over her death that his mind forced him to repress the memory.

Will's tragic backstory in Will Trent season 2 will undoubtedly come back in season 3. He hasn't had time to process the new trauma fully, and the GBI agent might even wonder if he has any other horrifying repressed memories. Ultimately, Will certainly isn't done reflecting on his past and the ABC series isn't finished exploring his history.

5 Gina Seeking Custody Of Her & Ormewood's Kids

Will Trent Season 2, Episode 10

Close

Ormewood's relationship with his wife, Gina, was put to the ultimate test in Will Trent season 2, and it doesn't look like the two are going to make it. The detective found out Gina was cheating on him, but since Ormewood had his fair share of affairs, he was willing to look past it and become a better man for his wife and children. It was like a wakeup call, and when Gina checked herself into a mental health facility, Ormewood tried to be the best father he could be to his son and daughter, Max and Cooper.

Although Ormewood experienced terrific character development in Will Trent season 2 and was, by all means, a good dad, Gina still wanted a divorce when she returned in the finale. While divorce was certainly for the best, given their history, Gina then dropped the (actual) shocking bomb — she was moving away and going to seek full custody of the kids. Ormewood seemed to accept the divorce news well, but he became quite stern when Gina mentioned getting custody and told her, "I'm really glad that you're feeling better. But there is no way in hell you're taking my kids."

Ormewood helped Angie cover up Lenny's murder, so his involvement might come into play during Angie's trial in Will Trent season 3.

When Will Trent season 3 premieres, viewers can expect Ormewood to fight tooth and nail for his son and daughter. Just when he has formed a deep connection with his kids, Gina wants to take them away. Only time will tell who comes out victorious (it certainly won't be Max and Cooper), but Gina's revelation undeniably sets up Ormewood's storyline in season 3.

4 Amanda Not Coming Clean About Planting Evidence On Her Abuser

Will Trent Season 2, Episode 5

Close

Will Trent season 2, episode 5 primarily focused on Amanda Wagner and a traumatic moment from her days as a patrol officer. When she pulled a man (Chuck Murray) over on the side of the road, he overpowered her and tried to rape her. Murray was a serial rapist, and when he was about to be let free because one of his victims was too afraid to testify, Amanda planted 28 grams of cocaine on him. Consequently, Murray served 30 years in prison, but his sentence ended in episode 5.

The Will Trent writers love to bring past mistakes back around, even seasons later, so, Amanda's bad deed may come back to haunt her in season 3.

Murray sought revenge on Amanda and tried to frame her for murder. Then, Murray ran his car into Amanda and Will's when they were driving to the GBI headquarters so that Amanda could confess. After Amanda got out of the crushed vehicle, Murray tried to murder her, but Will shot and killed him. As a result, Amanda decided not to come clean about planting evidence, severely disappointing Faith. However, the Will Trent writers love to bring past mistakes back around, even seasons later, so, Amanda's bad deed may come back to haunt her in season 3.

3 Crystal's Death

Will Trent Season 2, Episode 10

Close

One of the Will Trent season 2 finale's biggest twists was the revelation that Crystal was the serial killer Will, Faith, and Ormewood were looking for. Of course, the audience knew she was capable of murder because she killed Lenny in season 1, but it was still shocking. Once Angie learned the truth, she tried to help the teenager, but Crystal ran away. She tried jumping on a rock to get away from Angie, but Crystal slipped and fell, fatally hitting her head, and the river carried her downstream. Angie caught up with Crystal's body, but it was too late.

Angie began Will Trent season 2, episode 10 in good spirits as she felt like she was finally in a good place in her life. She had Will and a potential job with the GBI, so, everything was coming up roses. However, that all fell apart when Angie discovered Crystal had been killing more sexual predators. Crystal's death just added more salt to the wound (along with Angie's later arrest), and when Will Trent season 3 premieres, Angie will be mourning Crystal and potentially at the lowest she has ever been (which says a lot).

2 Will Arresting Angie

Will Trent Season 2, Episode 10

Close

Once Will discovered Angie had covered up Lenny's murder, he had to make one of the most difficult decisions he would ever have to make in his life. At first, when Will took the elevator up to the APD's floor to see Angie, the Will Trent season 2 finale showed a flash-forward of what Will and Angie's life could have been if he didn't turn her in for obstructing justice. They got married, had children, and their children gave them grandchildren. Unfortunately, it was all just a dream, and in reality, Will arrested Angie.

Arresting Angie might be the most significant moment of Will Trent season 2 that will have the biggest impact on season 3. It cuts off any possibility of Will and Angie's relationship ever working, seeing as it might be hard for someone to choose to spend the rest of their life with the person who arrested them. Plus, Angie's arrest might lead to jail time, and it indicates her law enforcement career is over.

Related Will Trent Season 2 Ending: Where Did Will Go Addressed By Co-Showrunner Will Trent co-showrunner Daniel Thomsen addresses where Will went at the end of season 2, hinting at his location following a major decision.

1 Will Running Away After Angie's Arrest

Will Trent Season 2, Episode 10

Close

Just when the audience thought the ending of Will Trent season 2 couldn't include any more twists, the episode closed on a cliffhanger — Will ran away from Atlanta with Betty in tow, and no one knew where he went or how long he would be gone. Arresting Angie undoubtedly broke something in Will, and the pain was too much for him to handle, so he left town. No one could blame him, but it would also be better for Will to face his issues instead of running away from them.

When season 3 premieres, fans will (hopefully) learn where Will escaped to and how long he intended to be gone. The most likely possibility is that he went to see his Uncle Antonio in Puerto Rico, but given Will's fragile state, his actions are unpredictable. Whatever the answers are, they will have an affect on Will's personal and work life in Will Trent season 3.
